Happy day! I made it down to 240, which was my goal for the end of April! Now hopefully I’ll get down to 237 or lower by the end of May! Also back on the exercise. This flu is still trying to hang on, but I’m flipping it the bird, since it won’t do more than make me extra tired!

Last day of Mr & Mrs Aussie’s visit. It was good but it was hard work; first time I’ve spent time with Mr A. Mrs A, D’s cousin, visited six months ago. He’s a good guy (they’ve been married for 31 years, she’s blind and he treats her like a queen) but he is an awful lot like Crocodile Dundee—a bit OTT—and I am not exaggerating very much. Same hat, but no whip at least. A little went a long way. Phew.

We took them off to see the Silver Leaf Monkeys (they loved!), to our favourite riverfront Chinese village for seafood (they devoured), off to the Indian temple “Batu Caves” (oohs and aahs) and a drive through some really spectacular jungly countryside with huge granite-faced hills we discovered quite by accident. We all oohed and aahed.

Still working through That Willpower Book and loving it. Learning. Practicing. Liking. Taking notes. Splurged and bought the eBook so I can re-‘read’ by listening. Feels worth the indulgence.

Very happy with April. I had recently made my rules less specific month-on-month, less frequent, trying to find that baseline level where I could be successful and still achieve forward progress. In April, I think I perhaps even over-achieved on them a bit as a result. First month ever I haven’t asked for fruit but felt some stability. So that’s’ good. It’s useful info as now I will crank things up a little bit for May since I know more about what I can do and am working on strategies to increase it without falling apart. Happy month-end, all!

:) SylvieF

Ah, yes, that baseline level. I think it changes, too, which is why it can be elusive. Glad you are feeling that stability. I can hear it in your descriptions of the Painters Drama and even in this visit of the Aussies – there’s this strong sense of grounding in the way that you write, and in your ability to find the joy and carry on. Resilience! That’s the sense I have. Good going!

I tend to feel like I’m not progressing unless I keep making my rules harder. Yet actually maintaining whatever momentum I do have feels like plenty of work for now. (Though I am tweaking one rule and it will be hard.)

The Willpower book sounds amazing – I may have to just buy it immediately! The library wait is soooo long.

Cynthia, by lowering my # of days/wk of exercising to 2 instead of 4 I finally achieved more than 4 for 3 weeks!
It must be a fatal flaw – or maybe just a f-ing flaw.

Sylvie, I also think I do not have the willpower to wait for the Willpower book. Seriously.

:) MaryAnn

My Willpower book will arrive this week.

It’s odd, the idea we have that we must make our rules/goals harder and harder and harder. (Calvinist work ethic?) I did that too for a while, and then eased up. I’m going to keep things at the eased-up level for a while. Life is short, and there are already enough things that are hard.

Cynthia, I love hearing about those bat caves and the silver-leaf monkeys. One day….

I don’t know what’s going on with me the last day or so. I’ve started hacking up crud, and doing anything at the gym has become an exhausting task. I still hit my times, and make sure to do extra, but I had to drop the intensity and weight to make it possible.

I took the dog for a very short little walk today. I feel like a liar just saying I walked her (our walks usually take about an hour, and involve a mile or two), but we did go around the block and back, and it was embarrassingly physically demanding, so I guess it counts.

Awesome day. Rode 26 miles!! Along the way, I stopped and bought tiny amounts of yummy things for a care package for my brother and his family: Itallian “Ugly But Good” cookies (like almond biscotti but with soft, chewey centers), gourmet jelly belly beans, chololate-chip-popcorn, mint-chololate covered espresso beans…hehe! And rocky road bars, my brother’s favorite. I also put some spices I gathered from specialty stores over the last month. I think I have a strong hunting/gathering instinct that finds fulfillment in projects like these, hehe! ANyhow, my brother, bless his soul, can be a bit obtuse and non-repsonsive when it comes to expressions of affection and such, so I hope the gift is speaking his language (and I think it is).

ANyhow, for dinner I had 2 GIANT salads, just so yummy! Also a chocolate yogurt for dessert. Only one more day in the month left!!

An okay day. Several annoyances of different sizes set the grumbles sticking to me; had a hard time getting them off. But some pleasant things in the day too.
Nice walk along the lake on a quiet, still evening. Lake was almost perfectly flat (seldom see it that way), covered with tiny ripples, under beautiful subtle pastel sky. Saw one white swan floating. Then it took off into the sky, likely toward its night-time resting place in a more sheltered area.
Saw the season’s first bat, too.

:) SylvieF

I know what you mean about grumbles sticking, like burrs. It’s great that you could also see the pleasant things, though! I think bats are good omens – we have them here in Prospect Park, they swoop down swallow-like at dusk. Hope you have a better day tomorrow!

:) Quinnie

Beautiful descriptive, MA. Just want to thank you for your poetry and prose, wise words and amazing humor. Happy month’s end.

:) MaryAnn

Sylvie – that’s exactly the image: like burrs.
It’s fun watching the bats near the lake. There’s the lake, the sand beach, a boardwalk, and a row of trees beside it. So when we walk along around dusk, bats swoop out of the trees into the empty sky, and loop back into the trees again – they’re easy to spot against the sky.

Quinnie – thank you! :-) Have a good May.

They either hibernate or fly south, depending on the species. There’s nothing for them to eat here in winter.

It was a good weekend. Got rained out of chores on Saturday but I finally made it to the Asian market! Yay! So I am finally able to make some of the foods I have been missing and that I used to lose weight way back when. I spent two solid hours, non stop, on mowing my lawn and my knees are shot. Bummer. It is a self propelled power mower, but I have a full acher of grass! I got a bunch more to do when I get home!

At the Asian market I got all the staples: soba noodles and all the stuff to go with them, good bosmati rice, good soy sauce, rice sprinkles, miso and all the fixings for a good miso soup, good soup bowles, some bamboo tongs and serving spoons, and a whole lot of mochi! Both bean and grean tea ice cream flavors. I was going to make something for lunch today but I was so wiped out from mowing, I did not have the engergy!!
