ProTip: If you’re setting up your rules for next month, and want to relax a rule you’ve been following (require fewer times on a DO rule, or allow more times on a DON’T rule), when you go to change the settings on that rule, it may initially look like the game won’t let you set your goal to the desired amount. When that happens, you need to adjust the “how often do you do this currently” slider.

For example, in March and April I had “limit red meat to 1 day a week” (and was good about this rule; the game tells me I’ve actually eaten red meat 0.8 days a week, on average). For May, I’m going to relax that and allow red meat 3 days a week. When I first go into the settings for that rule for May, though, I can’t adjust the “how many days do you want to allow red meat” slider to more than 1. But that’s because the “During a normal week, on about how many days do you eat red meat or pork” slider automatically imports the value based on what you’ve done in the past. So I have to first manually adjust that slider up to 3, and then it will let me set the goal for May to 3 times a week. (That’s for a DON’T rule. Reverse it for a DO rule, where the minimum rather than the maximum is imported based on your past behavior, and manually set the how-often-do-you-do-it-now slider lower than its true value to relax the rule.)

My workaround was just to delete the entire rule and start over from scratch. Nice to know I don’t have to do that next time I want to ease up on something.

Also, I just noticed the game may compute weird default values for how-often-do-you-do-it-now if a rule has come up as a pop quiz. I haven’t had “eat bright vegetables” as a regular rule, but it did come up as a pop quiz once, and I did in fact eat bright vegetables that day. Apparently the game interprets this as 100% compliance with “eat bright vegetables,” so thinking about that as a regular rule for May, I went to the settings for that rule, and it had “7 days a week” for “how often do you do this now.” (Which, again, can be manually changed, and would have to be before I could make it a rule for May requiring any less than 7 days a week.)

I had the same problem with my reading rule. I had to slide down the current value slider to keep it the same and make the rule easier (it’s easy for me to follow but I want to reinforce the habit I have, not increase the number).

Two days left in the month! It makes for some funny pro-rating of the rules. All my 3-day rules are marked having met the quota for the week already. Kind of amusing.

It’ll be a bit of an adjustment having the week start on Sunday next month. I’ve gotten used to having the weekend at the start of the week and using all my indulgences at the start. Now I’m going to actually have to save them up for the weekend! Total shift in the approach.

A great day! Productive morning, swimming, meetings with adviser, co-author, and one of my students in the afternoon, hit the gym, and then headed into the city to meet up with my boyfriend for margaritas and mexican food (which I think was well deserved after all that exercising!).

I’ve been trying hard to practice something my therapist told me a while back: when you make a mistake, it’s like driving your car off the road and into a ditch. You have a choice then, and it’s usually a pretty easy one. You can stay in the ditch, in the mud with the trash. Or you can get out and keep driving.

Thing is, sometimes you need a tow truck.

The little successes here have helped me to get out of the ditch. And realizing that I had the leeway to slack off a bit, well, that helped too. Here’s to no more mud.
