I saw this and it reminded me of bullet journals, journals in general. I’m still working on using mine regularly.

I’ve taken the 750 words August challenge. I’m looking forward to it. While on family vacation I was introduced to the idea of a 5-year diary. I just ordered this one http://www.theiceplant.cc/5year.html. This will be something to keep and look at in years to come (I hope), as opposed to 750 words, which serves a wholly different purpose. Anyone have a similar journaling practice?

Heart.full.16 10 · 2,977 pts

Did anyone see that 750words is going to be a pay site starting in April? I just saw that today. I read some of the comments, and many people are upset that Buster is going to charge a fee. What do you think? It seems to me that, just like HealthMonth, it is worth paying for. Just wondered if anyone else was thining about this.

:) MaryAnn

Hmmm…. I just started trying it out (free) a few weeks ago, just after I heard somewhere that this might happen soon.

I’ve been inconsistent with it. Because I was typing so furiously, I strained my arm. So I stopped for a bit and didn’t really get back into the swing of it.

I dunno…. pay, don’t pay. It’s surely worth something, but how much? (Do you know the proposed price?)

I’m not sure I would keep it up. A friend on another team, although she does use 750words, said that when she types (versus handwrites) she feels that “part of her soul is missing”. I feel that way, too.

Anyhow, yes, if I decided that I wanted to keep using it consistently, I’d pay a few bucks a month.

On the other hand, there are other ways to track daily writing.
A Word document will count the words for you.
Something like healthmonth will track the daily activity.
Although it was sort of interesting, I didn’t find the “themes” analysis and all of that, very useful.

:) SusanT

Furious typing. I can see you with Einstein hair and wild eyes. Sorry you made your arm hurt.

I’m not uncertain what I think about it. I don’t mind paying. I just wondered if other 750worders wanted to weigh in.

I know what your friend means. I like the handwritten aspect of writing. Having it online is just so much simpler and takes us much less space!

Not a biggie either way. Was just on my mind tonight.

:-)

:) MaryAnn

Yeah, it does take less space.
And then you don’t have to worry about shredding all those secret thoughts, eventually — you know, and finding those particular pages where you wrote about how you wished you could punch your MIL in the nose.

Just kidding, Susan!

:) CynthiaR

Hmmm, I already pay for 750words.com as a Patron, I guess, though I had completely forgotten that was why I paid (I just looked).

I guess I wouldn’t want to pay AND be a patron (and pay for that, too). I haven’t been using it lately but in the times when I have, for various reasons, it’s been great. And I like that all that stuff is still there.

When writing in your private journal also note what you ate that day and what kind of exercise you did. Later when reviewing what you wrote you can see what you ate and the kind of exercise you did that day and how it may/may not have affected your mood that day.

Hello everyone! This is my first game on HealthMonth, and I’m very excited! I’ve chosen not very hard to follow rules for myself for the first time. One of them is to write 2 pages in a private journal. I did it before, and I want to start doing it again. If anyone’s interested, I’ve found a list of 101 reasons to write a journal: http://www.easyjournaling.com/2011/07/101-reasons-to-write-a-journal/ (I hope external links are not forbidden…) It can be helpful and inspiring for someone interested.
Overall, wish everyone good luck!

Welcome, Olga! It sounds like you have a good approach to your first month. Thanks for the link! Journaling is one of my rules, too. I’ve been doing it for over a year and have only missed a few days. I love looking back on what I did and how I felt.

:) Harpocrat

Welcome, Olga. That list is good. I hope you are able to keep it up. I’ve never been able to write a journal/diary, although I suppose comments on this group are close to it. Enjoy your time with us :)

:) olgatikhonova

Thank you, Dani K! Do you use good old classic paper journals and pen/pencil? Or do you type on your notebook? I prefer typing on notebook due to my laziness :) and because it’s easier to search for a particular date afterwards.

Mark, thank you too. I must be catching up on walk 10000 steps a day rule tomorrow, but I keep doing my other rules smoothly. I wish you an easy month! :)

I use an website for my journaling that I can’t say enough about, so I’m glad you asked! It’s called OhLife, and every day at whatever time you specify, they send you an email to remind you to journal. You don’t even have to go to the site— you just answer the email. When you hit “send,” it automatically goes to your site in an online journal format. It’s private unless you share the login information with someone else. You can choose to print the journal or not.

If that was all it did, I would like it. There is something so easy about answering an email. And, if it’s still in my inbox, I know I haven’t done it yet for the day. The best part for me, though, is that with the reminder email comes an entry from the past. For the first month, your email will read, “It’s (whatever day and date). How did your day go? Remember this? One week ago, you wrote” and then it’s follwed by your entry from one week ago. After a month, it’s one month ago, and after a year, one year ago. I love seeing what I wrote a month or a year ago.

I suppose it’s possible that the site will be hacked, but there isn’t enough identifying information in my entries for anyone to figure out who I am even if they read the whole journal. From what I can tell though, it’s very secure.

The site is http://ohlife.com

Sometimes I’m out of thoughts, and while I don’t want to write about groceries, chores or the workday (which should have a separate observation I believe) I keep maintaining and revising lists. Like, things I fear, my (biggest) mistakes, what makes me more efficient, what keeps me calm / cools, what personal qualities I would like to develop more and whatever is right for you. My personal favourite is a ‘List of things I don’t know’.

Those of us into this private journaling journey can go to settings and click on the last link in the dropped down menu: “Schedule time off” when you know or suspect you will not be able to keep up your streak while traveling or giving birth or “retreating”, etc.

I was just writing in my journal (which has not been on the computer for 3-4 days!), and I think I figured out something crucial:
When I do something that I want to do, even though it is productive and important, I still have to be careful about my time! I always spend lots of time on things that are semi-important, and the whole day passes me by and I feel as though I did nothing!

I think that I need to concentrate more and spend less time, but still as much stuff in everything!

:) darianiff

I believe that the problem is that when we do something important, but it’s only one activity, it seems useless, because you do not do anything else.
But, hey, if you’ve done a lot of productive things, you just need to shut up that voice inside of you and enjoy your time :)

jonbro has a question about the Write in a private journal rule.

Heart.half.16 6 · 772 pts

I am wondering if the undirected self analysis that I am doing in my journal is actually dangerous, rather than helpful. I recognize that it is supposed to help me reflect on issues that are bugging me, but without a framework, I am having a bit of difficulty not falling into total self pity and negativity. I have had some exposure to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy and am going to try to use those techniques that I learned from it a bit more directly, but does anyone else have other tips that I might be able to use for this?

- scotland sans psychologist

:) nagrom

Uh oh – sorry bebe. I use my one page journal as a “things I did today” – if I even actually write it. You should lay off the self pity cause you are awesome. Look into finding a professional out there to talk with. I think it is useful to have another person who is aware of your needs and struggles to help keep you on track with your goals. Good luck – you are the best.

:) elipousson

I didn’t write about my sense of self or well being very often, mainly cause I never enjoyed it and rarely felt like I got somewhere. I don’t think I can offer any advice but I always feel like if something doesn’t work for you, don’t do it.

:) billyb

Being directed about the writing is a good idea. To direct non-self-analysis journal writing, I sometimes write entirely from another person’s perspective. If I choose somebody who absolutely gets on my nerves, the writing begins as a completely villifying cartoon of them, and if my human decency’s around that day, ends with empathy. Down with the fundamental attribution error!

:) jonbro

thanks folks! I will try out something different for the next one :)

Brie Cheese Appetizer

Ingredients

  • 1 (8 ounce) wheel Brie cheese
  • 60 g apricot preserves
  • 0.5 (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg white

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a cookie sheet. 2. Slice one wheel of Brie cheese in half so you have 2 circles of cheese. Spread apricot or peach preserves on (the cut side) half of one circle of brie. Make sandwich out of the two halves of Brie, so that the preserves are in the center of both halves. Wrap the entire wheel of Brie with one sheet of puffed pastry and flip the entire concoction onto the prepared cooking sheet so the seam is on bottom. Brush the puffed pastry with the egg white. 3. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the pastry in golden brown. Serve immediately.
