What shoes do you wear to weight train? My trainer suggested that I NOT where my Sauconys, but rather something flatter, like a “barefoot” type shoe. Curious if you’ve used a pair and how you liked them? SO many choices. Thanks in advance!

I usually lift in Nike Frees (barefoot type shoes)… or Chuck Taylors (again, flattish shoes). You want to avoid anything with lift/cushioning in the heel.

Learned some really interesting tips from Curtis (powerlifter friend) the Mark Rippetoe book Basic Strength. Two of the most relevant, for me:

(1) Weight machines are a total waste of time!

Human bodies don’t use single muscles in isolation, so spending hours on, e.g. a bicep curls machine won’t make you any better able to, say, lift a heavy box, because you’re not developing all the peripheral muscles & balancing abilities and whatnot that are necessary. Basically if you want to build core strength, muscle, etc. free weights are the only way to go.

(1)-(a) Squats are the most important thing ever. There is nothing they cannot do.

(2) You can lose weight a LOT faster by starting with strength training and cutting out cardio

I always assumed that to lose weight I’d have to run 5 days a week or otherwise work in tons of cardio. But even when I’d go to the gym every day for months I’d see no results. This time I’m trying a new experiment: strength training only, cutting out cardio (except for dancing). Allegedly getting stronger makes your body more efficient at shedding pounds. We’ll see how that goes. Gotta wait at least 2-3 months before I can expect to see any results anyhow, but I’m hopeful.

I’m basically writing off serious cardio for a couple of weeks in favor of the strength training, so we can compare notes. I will say that even after two weeks of strength training two days a week, I can really tell the difference in how I feel. I’ve only been doing body weight exercises, too.

Weight training is definitely the way to go. There are also a lot of exercises that can be done with body weight that offer even more “natural” exercising, such as the squat. Lunges are great for multiple muscles, a push-up (even a wall or step one) is great for chest (be sure to do them properly), and step ups and step down, etc. I found some great how-to videos on nerdfitness.com

Take a pair of 3 lb or 5lb hand weights on the elliptical or tredmill (walking) to get your arms pumping, increase calories burned and tone while you get cardio in.

If you need to lose weight, do it sensibly. Starvation and/or diets that offer a quick fix usually backfire and are harmful. There is not truth to the theories that suggest eating foods in any particular combination will promote weight loss. The only safe way to lose weight, feel good while doing it, and keep it off is to eat a balanced diet.

Di luar dugaan pihak Inggris yang menduga bahwa perlawanan di Surabaya bisa ditaklukkan dalam tempo tiga hari, para tokoh masyarakat seperti pelopor muda Bung Tomo yang berpengaruh besar di masyarakat terus menggerakkan semangat perlawanan pemuda-pemuda Surabaya sehingga perlawanan terus berlanjut di tengah serangan skala besar Inggris. Tokoh-tokoh agama yang terdiri dari kalangan ulama serta kyai-kyai pondok Jawa seperti KH. Hasyim Asy’ari, KH. Wahab Hasbullah serta kyai-kyai pesantren lainnya juga mengerahkan santri-santri mereka dan masyarakat sipil sebagai milisi perlawanan (pada waktu itu masyarakat tidak begitu patuh kepada pemerintahan tetapi mereka lebih patuh dan taat kepada para kyai) shingga perlawanan pihak Indonesia berlangsung lama, dari hari ke hari, hingga dari minggu ke minggu lainnya. Perlawanan rakyat yang pada awalnya dilakukan secara spontan dan tidak terkoordinasi, makin hari makin teratur. Pertempuran skala besar ini mencapai waktu sampai tiga minggu, sebelum seluruh kota Surabaya akhirnya jatuh di tangan pihak Inggris.

Setidaknya 6,000 pejuang dari pihak Indonesia tewas dan 200,000 rakyat sipil mengungsi dari Surabaya. 2. Korban dari pasukan Inggris dan India kira-kira sejumlah 600. 3 Pertempuran berdarah di Surabaya yang memakan ribuan korban jiwa tersebut telah menggerakkan perlawanan rakyat di seluruh Indonesia untuk mengusir penjajah dan mempertahankan kemerdekaan. Banyaknya pejuang yang gugur dan rakyat sipil yang menjadi korban pada hari 10 November ini kemudian dikenang sebagai Hari Pahlawan oleh Republik Indonesia hingga sekarang.

Peringatan Hari Pahlawan 10 November diharapkan dinilai sebagai momentum terbaik untuk merevitalisasi makna kepahlawanan yang akhir-akhir ini cenderung mulai memudar.

“Peringatan Hari Pahlawan harus bisa kita jadikan momen terbaik untuk memaknai nilai-nilai perjuangan para pahlawan, sehingga kita tidak hanya terjebak dalam kegiatan-kegiatan berbau seremonial,” ujar tokoh pemuda Tionghoa, Hasyim, SE (Oei Kien Lim) di Medan, Selasa [04/11].

Menurut dia, memperingati dan mengenang jasa-jasa kepahlawanan yang sudah memberikan segala yang mereka miliki memang tidak boleh ditinggalkan. Namun demikian diharapkan tidak terjebak dalam ritual-ritual perayaan sehingga akhirnya makna kepahlawanan itu menjadi hilang.

“10 November semestinya menjadi momentum untuk merevitalisasi makna kepahlawanan itu sendiri. Kita perlu memperingati dan mengenang jasa pahlawan, tetapi kita tidak boleh terjebak dalam gaya peringatan dan meninggalkan inti kepahlawanan mereka,” katanya.

Tokoh pengusaha yang akrab disapa A Lim itu menilai ada beberapa hal yang menjadi rancu pada setiap peringatan Hari Pahlawan selama ini, karena hanya dimaknai sebatas pengorbanan dan perjuangan dalam mengusir musuh.

“Sesungguhnya jauh lebih dalam dari semua itu. Karenanya 10 November kali ini harus benar-benar dijadikan momentum merevitalisasi makna kepahlawanan agar kita tidak salah lagi mengartikan pahlawan yang sebenarnya,” ujarnya.

Hasyim yang juga calon legislatif (caleg) PDIP nomor urut 4 untuk DPRD Kota Medan dari daerah pemilihan (Dapem) III itu berpendapat, makna kepahlawanan sesungguhnya adalah sosok yang mau memikirkan orang banyak dengan kehendak yang kuat, bukan mengembangkan kepentingan sendiri atau malah menjadi “musuh dalam selimut”.

“Pemerintah harus menyebarluaskan makna ini, karena semakin lama makna kepahlawanan semakin terdegradasi. Kalau terus menerus terdegradasi, maka bangsa ini akan hancur karena masing-masing hanya akan mementingkan diri sendiri,” katanya menambahkan.

Dia mencontohkan sosok Soekarno-Hatta dan sejumlah anggota Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (PPKI) seperti Oei Tiang Tjoei, Oei Tjong Hauw, Liem Koen Hian dan Mr. Tan Eng Hoa serta pahlawan nasional lainnya.

Mereka, katanya, menjadi fenomena pada masa perjuangan kemerdekaan. Mereka juga memiliki kehendak yang mampu membawa seluruh rakyatnya dalam tahap kehidupan yang lebih baik. Padahal, kalau mereka mau, mereka bisa mendapatkan kehidupan pribadi yang baik dari pemerintah kolonial tanpa harus dipenjara atau mendapat siksaan kehidupan lainnya.

“Tetapi mereka memilih berkorban untuk membuat rakyat memiliki bangsa yang bermatabat. Soekarno dan Hatta atau lainnya berjuang bukan untuk dirinya pribadi, tetapi untuk rakyat. Mereka intelektual dan memiliki kehendak yang mampu melampaui batas dirinya. Mereka memiliki pemikiran yang spektakuler untuk kesejahteraan rakyat,” ujarnya.

Sayangnya sosok-sosok seperti Soekarno-Hatta dewasa ini nyaris hilang, sementara makna kepahlawanan pun dirasa tidak lagi dipahami masyarakat. Akibatnya, pada akhirnya peringatan 10 November sebagai Hari Pahlawan hanya sekedar seremonial dan formalitas semata.

“Saya pikir, kalau saja kita semua mau merevitalisasi makna kepahlawanan, tentu akan lahir semangat baru dalam membangun negara. Paling tidak akan muncul Soekarno-Soekarno dan Hatta-Hatta modern yang kelak mengantarkan negeri ini pada kemakmuran,” katanya

As a certified personal trainer, I take working out pretty seriously. I am healing from a fractured hip last year and I tore my calf in march which has limited what I can do in the gym. How I manage, I do the workouts I really always wanted to do. I do 35-40 minute super-set weight training workouts. I work fast, hard, and limit the rest to almost nothing. By doing this, I actually turn my strength training into cardio. I’ve made great progress, my stomach is flattening again (In Iowa, when I just kind let myself go I was 255lbs and not muscular) and i’m running out of room in my sleeves. It feels awesome.

I just tried the no-rest-between-sets. It can get tricky when you try to do a circuit — but as long as I skip a machine and come back to it when an athlete is done, I can do them with just a few seconds between each machine. In 36 minutes I got 24 sets done (a little down time to set the weights and seats to my personal settings).

Try upping the reps or sets slowly. The motivation will come from seeing if you can one-up yourself. Remember, ONE more rep means you’re stronger!

The secret for me is close tracking of my progress. I can “see” results pretty quickly on a graph and that keeps me motivated even though it takes longer to see bigger muscles on my body.

You have to post an update to the wall! First, click the blue “Weight & Energy Update” button, then use the sliders to record your energy, enter your weight in the box if you want (there’s a check box if you want to keep the exact number private) enter any other notes you want to in the text box and post. Voila!

It helps if you enter your starting weight in the Optional Information box on the right hand side of the game wall. That way you can track how your weight has changed.

Yeah, it’s just something I haven’t gotten to yet. Until then, you could just enter kg and try to ignore the lbs (it will be pretty obvious). It’s all about relative change anyway, right?

I’ve noticed a lot of women who talk about “fitness” seem to equate that with “running”. Wondering why they don’t often add weight training in?

Cause me? I am most successful at losing/maintaining weight/body fat level when I lift. (which often seems to be the arena of the 20-30 something guys)…

This month I’m trying to lift weights twice a week! I bought cute little 5 pound weights at Target that are actually pretty challenging. I have zero upper body strength and joint problems in my wrists, but I’m taking it slow.
