Anyone have good tricks for forcing water into my system more when I can’t stand the taste? I’m also getting tired of the lemon/water combo.

:) ambrosia

cucumber can be lovely in water, very refreshing, makes me feel like I am in a spa. Is the taste of your tap water the problem? Would a filter of some sort improve it?

:) ElsaM

I second the cucumber, which gives a faint, refreshing green-grassy taste that I find really pleasant. I also like an orange slice instead of lemon. Don’t just squeeze the juice in; take the wedge and really kersmash it into the glass so the oils get released, then leave it in and pour water over it.

Do you like flavored seltzer? I tried a few flavors and settled on black cherry as my favorite (and orange as my least favorite). If you don’t like the prefab flavors, you can put a splash of your favorite juice in a glass, then top it up with seltzer or club soda to make a spritzer. It’s like a very, very lightly flavored Orangina.

In summer, I often make a pitcher of peppermint tea to drink cold with ice cubes, or just brew a pot of hot peppermint tea and pour it over ice cubes. Herbal tea isn’t plain water, but it’s uncaffeinated, so it’s equally hydrating. (Obviously, medicinal tea is a different story.)

We bought a SodaStream last year. I only remembered them from the 80’s, but they’re randomly really trendy again (at least in Australia). We bought the flavour syrups at first, but then I discovered that I really like plain carbonated water! Makes it feel more special than tap. (Although my dentist did say that if your teeth are sensitive, you should forgo carbonation entirely. But right now my hydration is a bigger concern than my enamel.)

:) kanata

I’m small town gal so haven’t even heard of carbonated water til this past year. I think I’ll try out the orange slices and cucumber. The tap filter just isn’t killing it anymore.

:) Room641-A

Another vote for cucumber. It’s so simple but it’s really good. This is probably obvious to everyone but me, but peel and seed it first :)

Cuke/lemon combo is also good.

I’ve found drinking from a [reusable] water bottle helps much more than a cup or glass. It’s also easier to keep track of amounts this way.

:) sperose

I try to have one or two of those Nalgene bottles a day. I keep one on my desk that is filled with tea (which isn’t exactly water, but I hope it’s close enough) and one in my lunch bag that is water flavored with those liquid thingys (mine is the fruit punch flavor Mio right now). I know that those things are full of chemicals and such, but I don’t use the full recommended amount and I figure that getting more fluids into me helps to combat the chemicals because otherwise I wind up dehydrated ALL THE TIME. I can’t stomach the taste of plain water from the tap.

:) erloteiel

+1 for seltzer water or mineral water. I’m not sure if the carbonation makes it less healthful, but it’s my go-to when I want something “fancier” than tap water.

If I have a goal to drink x amount of glasses of water a month, why do I lose points for indulgence if I drink lots of water? Anyone know? I’m new to the game and just realized that is why I was losing points. I may have to die of thirst until the end of the month :-)

:) Nicole Caron

Interesting question. How are you answering the rule when you log in? It looks like you set it up the right way. You could, next month, set it up as a per day rule or times per week. Plead for fruit – lots of people have lots to give, especially at the end of the month! And, have you thought about playing on a team? You get tons of support on a team – way more fun. Team Grace Notes and Healthy Booklovers are especially awesome teams and always looking for new members :-)

:) MaryAnn

Not sure if this is the case here, but sometimes there’s actually a bug in that kind of tracking rule. I had one for doing something X times a week, and it was wonky. (I got more points when I entered 0, than when I entered a number.)
I reported the bug, and I was told the bug was fixed, but it never did get fixed right, so I finally gave up on that rule.

I think I did what Nicole said — had the same goal, but used a different, per-day rule to track it.

Good idea, to join a team. Especially if you want to make a plea for fruit. People tend to notice it more, if you’re part of a team.

Do you know how to make a plea for fruit?
…. near the top of the display, where it says “Add something to the wall”, you click on the tab, “plea for fruit”.

You do that to make sure you have at least one lifepoint when you finish the month. Now would be a good time to do it! :-)

:) tapuccio

OK – thanks to both of your for your answers. I will join a team AND watch how I answer my question the last few days of this month. I’ll set it up differently next time and see if that makes a difference.

I have learned a rule of thumb for calculating how much water you should drink every day. Take your weight in pounds, divide by 2. That number is the number of ounces you should drink each day. For Health Month, you could consider a “glass” to be 8 ounces. Divide your total daily ounces by 8 and you have the total number of ounces for the day. Multiple that by 7 to get glasses per week. Sounds complicated but it’s not. If you do not want to do the math yourself, then you can you the following calculator or the following chart:

CALCULATOR:
http://bit.ly/HMWaterCalculator

CHART:

80 lbs = 35 glasses per week for Health Month (5 glasses per day)
90 lbs = 39 glasses per week for Health Month (6 glasses per day)
100 lbs = 44 glasses per week for Health Month (6 glasses per day)
110 lbs = 48 glasses per week for Health Month (7 glasses per day)
120 lbs = 53 glasses per week for Health Month (8 glasses per day)
130 lbs = 57 glasses per week for Health Month (8 glasses per day)
140 lbs = 61 glasses per week for Health Month (9 glasses per day)
150 lbs = 66 glasses per week for Health Month (9 glasses per day)
160 lbs = 70 glasses per week for Health Month (10 glasses per day)
170 lbs = 74 glasses per week for Health Month (11 glasses per day)
180 lbs = 79 glasses per week for Health Month (11 glasses per day)
190 lbs = 83 glasses per week for Health Month (12 glasses per day)
200 lbs = 88 glasses per week for Health Month (13 glasses per day)
210 lbs = 92 glasses per week for Health Month (13 glasses per day)
220 lbs = 96 glasses per week for Health Month (14 glasses per day)

NOTE: Health Month maximum per week is 100 glasses, so if you are over 220 lbs, use the calculator link above.

Well… According to health institution a men should not really get more than 4L of water per day including water contained in fruit, your coffee, etc. Obviously if your are an athlete or if you have a special condition that could change but keep in mind that it is possible to drink too much water if the kidney cannot eliminates all the water.

Hydration during exercise is optimal intake of drinks that improve the absorption of fluids. Such drinks should be formulated so as to take advantage of the principles underlying physiological fluid absorption, carbohydrate and electrolytes in the proximal small intestine. Consequently, an optimum sports drink should contain a moderately dilute carbohydrate source (eg, 5 to 8% of carbohidratosen formof glucose and sucrose), and electrolytes (sodium, potassium) solutes known to stimulate the absorption of fluids and maintain homeostasis .

1. So- I googled myself today and was horrified to find my HM info right out there for the world to see! Eeek! I don’t want people to know what I struggle with. So I changed my name to ASTRID. Is there any way to hide my rules and info?
2. Also- I can’t find any way to edit my rules.
3. AND I couldn’t add the custom rule about brushing my cat’s teeth because there wasn’t any custom rule option when I was making my rules.

ANY ADVICE?

:) jsmowgood

I just joined and from what I can see. It looks like once you’ve put your rules down and “sign” you can’t add or edit rules. Unless someone knows something that I don’t.

:) Paula Gregovich

I think Jas is right that you can change your rules up until the point where you click sign, and then you are committed. Sorry! If it works for you you can always change your rules on a piece of paper and just go by that. OR perhaps pay all over again (because I know you can join the month a few days in).

I think it is smart to be Astrid on here. You could even go so far as to change your last name if you wanted to. People complain about the privacy problems on fb, but HM is much worse!

As for the custom rule option, I am going to go out on a limb and say it was probably there somewhere…I have never seen a month that didn’t offer the rule. Maybe it was under a different catagory? But perhaps it was a glitch. You can still do it! That sounds gross.

My doctor told me to drink enough water that my urine was almost clear and did not smell at all. Sorry if that’s gross but it helps me pace my water intake. It’s easy to drink water at home but very hard to remember at work.
Without effort I easily get dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration for me include frequent headaches and slow “smoothing” of skin on the back of my hand when it is pinched.
The lose-lose part for me is I wake up in the middle of the night to drink or pee.

:) sundari

Do you guys count herbal (non-caffeinated) tea as water? I drank a lot of cold lemon ginger tea today, and I’m not sure what to count it as. I mean, herbal tea is 99.2% water, right?

:) SnarlFurillo

i treat anything non-caffeinated and non-carbonated as water, but that’s a left-over tic from a long-ago weight loss program. i think you should count it as water if that makes sense to you, and not if it doesn’t, but that’s kind of hippy-dippy of me.

:) thegirlmaxtous

This isn’t currently one of my rules, but I’d definitely count non-caffeinated tea as water, as long as it had no sugar/sweetener or anything else added. Can’t see why it would be any less good for you. Keep it up! :)

Absolutely! As long as it 1) is non caffeneinated 2) has no sweetener, and 3) has no added fat (milk/cream). I had a nurse tell me once that chamomile tea didn’t count as water, but I happily ignore that in favour of every other source that says it does.

:) workerant

Lemon ginger tea? That sounds good. How do you make it?

:) johnnydale

I don’t have “drink water” as a rule, either, but in my own head I count my sugar-free drink mixes (like Crystal Light) as, if not water, then not something for me to feel guilty about. (I know that if this were AskMe, though, the someone would start moaning about the artificial sweeteners.) Because, honestly, if I tried to wean myself off of it right now, I’d be chugging from a two-liter before the week was out.

:) arcticwoman

Agreed. Artificial sweeteners are a lesser-of-two-evil propositions for me. Dessert every night or dessert once a week and diet Dr. Pepper on the other nights? One of these options is clearly a better choice for me, and if I just said “no sweets at all!” then you’d better believe I’d be binging.

part of my water consumption last month was green tea. if you’ve gotta mix it up to stay on track then so be it!

:) donnagirl

Yeah, I’d agree it’s all about your intention. I drink a lot of tea, part of my water rule was to get more hydration without caffeine, so for me, tea doesn’t count. But if you were going for hydration without calories, tea is very countable.

:) webgoddess

I’d count tea. It’s like having nicotine patches. If you need tea as an intermediate step towards getting more water, totally legit.

Another approach: I was reading a runner’s training book the other day that said tea, soda, and even coffee do count towards your water. Yeah, caffeine does have a diuretic effect, but you’re still having a net gain of water. So maybe you could count each cup as, like, 3/5 of the equivalent of water?

shootingstar has a question about the Drink enough water rule.

Heart.full.16 10 · 65 pts

Okay, so those of you who have learned to drink more water. What are some easy ways to start off adding more to your day? I don’t particularly like water that much, though sometimes I do crave it. And the only time I ever really consume more than a glass or so is at the gym, where I bring a 32 ounce bottle and usually drink about that much/or a bit more or less. But unless I’m being active, I just don’t feel like I need it. Drinking water with meals is doable but tough. I like some sort of flavor, so I will have milk, juice, or the occasional soda. I suppose I could up my tea intake even more.

:) NimmieAmee

So, I started out with Vitamin Water, because it had flavor. I would get 2 20 oz bottles, and I would set the goal of having drunk both by the end of the day. After a few weeks of this, I switched one to water. Then last month, I made both water.

:) Z303

Vitamin Water is loaded with sugar at least here in the UK. We had some at a barcamp last year, very dehydrating

At first I tried to alternate drinking water and tea/soda/coffee, then increasing the number of glasses of water to other drinks. Like Catherine , always having a glass nearby made it easier as I’m lazy and would sooner take a sip than get up to make another drink.

:) Kicktoria

If I’m at work, or zoning out in front of the computer, I will drink anything that’s put in front of me. I’m not aware that I’ve been doing it until I reach for the bottle and – whoa! it’s empty.

:) ambrosia

Maybe it’s just me, but if there is a straw in my glass, I can suck down the contents in nothing flat. So I have a big water glass with a straw in it.

I’ve often thought about putting lemon and cucumber slices in a pitcher of water (like they do at some spas) but I’ve never actually implemented that one. So refreshing, though.

:) ocherdraco

I have an 8 oz cup in my bathroom, and when I stumble in each morning, I quickly down three cups. Even if I don’t drink any more water all day, it gives me a good base level. It also happens to be the time of day when I’m thirstiest, and a good time for building a consistent habit.

:) sarahperiwinkle

Seconding bearwife- add some lemon wedges or other fruit or a few slices of cucumbers to your water bottle and leave it in the fridge overnight. So tasty! Also seconding ambrosia, I don’t know what the deal is with straws, but they make things way easier to drink. LAZINESS FTW. I really like the Camelbak straw-top bottles. BPA-free and practically indestructible and easy to carry and clean.

I’m a beverage hog, I like having a beverage at all times. If I feel a bit peckish between meals, I drink some water, it fills that void. If I feel hot, I drink some water, it helps me get my temp back to normal. It also helps my skin look better, I think.

:) headnsouth

I fill my cup/bottle at the water cooler, and then stand there and drink as much as I can before topping it off again and going back to my desk. I also have a mental limit of other things I’m allowed to drink (2 cups of coffee in the morning, one diet coke every 3 days). Other than that it’s just water.

:) shootingstar

I’m going to try infusing some water with lemon slices this evening for a change. I definitely feel better when I’m able to drink more water. It’s also a bit of a counter to effects from my generally low blood pressure. So, this is definitely a change I’d like to make and stick with.

:) webgoddess

I bought myself one of those nifty steel water bottles in bright red that says KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON. It makes me happy. I fill it in the morning when I get to work. If it’s in front of me at my desk, I just automatically drink from it (like Lucinda up there). I usually end up refilling it once or twice a day.

:) heartstew

I don’t like plain water with my meals, but at the same time I’m trying to cut down on sugary drinks. The substitutes I like are soda water with lime juice and a little honey, and Arnold Palmers (half iced tea, half lemonade). For the latter, I’ve been making a pitcher of iced tea and then adding a tub of Crystal Light lemonade mix, which is low-calorie.

:) smpa

I challenge myself to drink as much water as I drink everything else – so 20oz of coca-cola and 8oz of milk means 28oz of water. On really good days I’ll double it, or I’ll “earn” drinks for dinner by drinking water during the day, with the result that I’m less thirsty at dinner time, and drink less of the sweet stuff.

To people with the weekly water target rule (‘drink X glasses of water a week’): I find myself wishing it was a daily rule (‘drink X/7 glasses of water a day’), since if I’m under a few days I’m really unlikely to drink like 20 glasses in one day to make up for that and hit my weekly target. I finally figured something easy out that helps me with drinking enough water! Are you ready for this? Don’t wear lip balm.

I find that if my lips are dry, I remember to drink. If they’re not, I put it off or just don’t think about it at all, and end up drinking only 2 or 3 glasses a day. I know that it’s been mentioned here before, but I found it really easy to keep track of how much water I drank yesterday when I used a Nalgene with volume markings on the side.

How do you keep track of how much water you drink during the day?

At this point, I’m not drinking enough for it to be difficult to remember (my goal is only 20 glasses a week), but generally, when I need to keep a tally of something like that, I take a pen and keep the tally on the back of my hand. (I know it’s odd, but I’m a forgetful person, and my hand never gets lost like a notebook would.) My boyfriend sends emails or texts to himself with his phone.

It’s not the most elegant solution, but I fill a half-gallon jug with filtered water at the start of the day, pour all my glasses of water from that, and then estimate based on how much is left in the jug at the day’s end.

That’s actually a really great idea. I might do that myself.

I suppose my goal is a little misleading. I want to drink 14 glasses of water a week, but I drink out of a big 20-ounce cup so my glasses are way more than 8 oz, lol.

I use a refillable liter bottle. My goal is four liters a day, so I put three rubber bands around the bottle & remove one each time I refill it.

Catlet, I like that idea a lot! I think I’ll try it!

I refill 16.9 ounce bottles – the stack (or rather bag) is a good reminder to drink more. This also lets me stick a bunch of bottles right next to me on my desk, guilting me into drinking more.

Great ideas everyone. I tend to just refill a glass every time I’m thirsty so at the end of the day I’m not sure how much I drank.
I might have to try the bottle method!

I wish I didn’t decide to drink more water in the middle of Winter. Hello, gross public bathrooms.
