I used to be a very addicted smoker. I used to smoke a package a day, maybe 2 if I used to go out by night! Since here in France, tobacco is rather expensive, I tried instead of spending everyday 6’50€ on a package to buy myself rolling tobacco. Not only I save about 50-60€ a week but also, I smoke much less! Practically, a package of rolling Golden Virginia’s lasts me 7 days.

One quality of most people’s “DON’Ts” is that they are much more difficult to obey when sad or stressed. We all want to indulge ourselves a little when things aren’t going well. This is especially true with smoking, for me. But if we can’t give in to the nihilism of smoking, or baby ourselves with rich unhealthy foods, what CAN we do to give ourselves a little treat when things are not going our way?

This has been really hard for me too. In the end, I give myself the gift of time, like if I want to go sit in Starbucks and read when I should probably be doing my taxes, or something. If it doesn’t have immediate and dire consequences, I genuinely put it off without feeling guilty. Or sometimes I’ll go out to eat a salad instead of eating the salad stuff I have at home.

Super spicy food sometimes does it for me. No idea if you’re a spicy food fan, but a big bowl of fiery curry (maybe over brown rice or quinoa, if it’s allowed) will often at least dampen my craving for an indulgence. Alternatively, how about a hot bath, a cup of tea, and a trashy novel?

I stopped smoking almost two weeks ago! I had one cigarette last Saturday and one cigarette tonight. I definitely miss the ritual. Coffee/cigarette. Driving/cigarette. Drinking/cigarette. Get home from work/cigarette. etc etc. Start new rituals! coffee and piece of fruit while standing outside enjoying the morning (gay but healthy). driving and chewing gum. drinking and….more drinking? sex? pooping probably. alcohol does that.

The first and the most important ‘move’ towards quitting tobacco/smoking is… one must immediately get rid of the friends/relatives/colleagues that accompany in smoking. We’re no Gods. It’ll be asking too much if you’re in regular contact with a smoker and still expect that you wouldn’t pick the habit back.

I’m looking for some advice for next month -

I’m a pack-a-day smoker and have been for longer than I care to remember. Health Month has been really useful so far for breaking some bad habits and creating some good ones, but does anyone have any advice on using it to cut down/quit smoking? Has anyone tried it?

I used to be a smoker. I quit after I graduated college. My method was to gradually cut back — even though most people would say this doesn’t work, it did for me. I charted how many cigarettes I was smoking a day and gradually cut them out (smoking every other break instead of every break, or only at dinner instead of at lunch or dinner) and then when I got down to 5 or so a day, I just forced myself to cut those last few.

I did substitute lollipops when I hit a cigarettte stressor at work (Dum Dums are the smallest and most calorie friendly!). It took some time but was worth it.

My advice would be to not try to go cold turkey on it. It’s a habit you developed gradually so it will be easiest and most likely to “take” if you break it gradually. Make your goals challenging but not overwhelming. :)

Thanks :) I was thinking of trying to cut down to half a pack a day, but even that might be too much at once.

The Dum Dums idea is a good one – my primary problem with quitting in the past has been that I can smoke in my office, and I share space with a die-hard chain smoker. Every cold-turkey attempt has been broken the second I walked into the office, and I haven’t found the right thing to ease the cravings when I’m confronted with someone smoking on the other side of a fairly small room.

My little sister quit cold turkey a couple of years ago and her advice for quitting has always been “just stop smoking”. Helpful…

I’m going to try cutting it down to 15 a day, and I think that’s doable! Thanks for the stellar advice.

I am terrified of quitting smoking. I have quit twice before in my 7 years of full time smoking. First time lasted over a year. Second time only a couple of months. Social drinking and accessibility got me last time. I want to be quit for good in January so I can have a long and healthy life with my future husband. Any tips?

I know for myself, when quitting anything, I absolutely must have a reason to quit that weighs a LOT more than all the reasons to not quit.
Why are you terrified of quitting smoking?
Problem is, there are lots of people who actually live until ripe old age and smoke, drink, etc. Ya gotta have a reason that makes YOU want to be without cigarettes.
Smell on clothes and hair? Brown teeth and fingers? Smokey breath? Pregnancy impacted by tobacco smoke? Being controlled by a substance’s hold on your biology?
Do you remember why you started smoking?
It looks so darn cool, you know. Just think… if you stop smoking, you’ll be giving up that cool look. You’ll be giving up an old friend who stands by you when others may not. You’ll be giving up an alternative to eating when you don’t want to eat… you may become enormous! You’ll give up the social thing that smokers have with each other. You’ll go through withdrawal. You’ll probably always always always be able to go off the wagon and pick up a smoke and enjoy it for the rest of your life. You’ll miss the extra oxygen (fact) that smokers take in with the tobacco. There are lots of reasons NOT to stop. So when you gear up and set the goal to stop, make it really mean enough to make it so you don’t want to look back. Wow, that was a lot of words…

Thanks Brooke! A lot of what you bring up is so valid for me. I am terrified because I don’t want to fail, and because I know I will miss all those things you listed as pro’s. Why i want to quit: my car smells like shit, I hate not being able to breath at times (and I know not smoking will gradually improve this), my breath stinks, it costs a lot of money, I feel guilty doing it in public, I wan’t a healthy body, I don’t want cancer, I want to have children who aren’t born with smoke related defects. All good reasons right? And I have consciously made myself aware that they are better reasons that those I have for staying a smoker. However, if it were that easy I would have quit by now. I marvel at those who can cut down to 2 a day. I can’t handle having any less than 4. For me it will be all or nothing, but I am afraid of failing and starting over. And I am afraid of gaining weight hahaha.

First cig is usually only the way to work (in my car) or just whenever I feel like it on a non-work day (though usually I wait a while). I smoke less on days off, but at work I smoke one on way to work, during every break, and one on way home.

I have a couple of potentially good ideas, especially since you have a specific number of cigarettes you want each day.
Idea 1:
Have three and a half cigarettes (max) every day for January. Three a day (max) for February. Two and a half each day (max) for March. Two a day (max) for April. One and a half each day (max) for May. One a day (msx) for June. Half of one for July (msx) and in August you’re off ‘em for good.
Note: If you were to do it this way, you canNOT smoke a little and put it out and relight it, cuz that is SUPER bad for your body. BUT, you can break it in half before you light up so you’d be smoking halves instead of whole cigs.

Idea 2:
Whenever you have your first cig of the day… week one you keep having it at that time. Week two, you have it 15-30 minutes later. Week three, 15-30 minutes later than Week two. Week four, 15-30 minutes later than week three. Then, the next month you just keep on that way. You’ll discover, among other things, that the day and your body and your taste buds actually feel and taste great until you have that first drag.

You could also accelerate Idea 1 by doing it in weeks instead of months… unless that would be too daunting. I’d go with the Kaizen rules on this one so you don’t freak yourself out.

Good comments about the smoking thing. Cold Turkey worked for me many years ago. I like the half a cig idea. another is to roll each cig you smoke—right before smoking it. makes you have to take some time with each one and gives time to reconsider. A friend of mine stopped using this technique.

…and if you roll them yourself, you could determine how much tobacco you want to smoke in a given day and ration each cig accordingly, lessening the amount as you go…

I think we are going cold Turkey, because I had to consider how my hubby felt about quitting. We both (myself more so) are pretty lazy and don’t like things to be too complicated, so just quitting without counting smokes a day as we cut down, or attaching conditions to smoking, seems like the way to go. Hopefully together we can keep each other in check and fight through the cravings. For me, smoking is more of a behavioral thing than a physical need. I want to light one up when I get in the car no matter how many I’ve had that day, or how recent my last one was. I think driving will be my biggest temptation.

Megan, Good choice, I think. And as for driving two ideas come to mind: bite your fingernails instead—just kidding! Do you have a CD player in your car? (or tape?) Put on something you like and sing along—singing is really healthy, by the way.
And so is chewing gum. Helps you focus—it’s true. No kidding.

My uncle quit by smoking cigs at the same time as usual, but only smoking half. That way he still had his routine, but didn’t get as much nicotine. Once he’d been at half for a while he went down to 1/4, iirc, and then started cutting out the breaks one by one.

Also, Havi Brooks has this to say when she was asked how she quit: http://www.fluentself.com/blog/habits/smokers-edition/ (Havi is my Shiva Nata teacher and business hero and all around awesome person).

I read somewhere that nicotine is more addictive than heroin, so smokers who quit are friggin awesome and I admire them a lot. You guys kick ass, and I know you can do it!

Thanks Ealasaid! Yah, I’ve heard of that too, and sometimes I definitely feel it! I think the “more addictive” is a compilation of several things: chemical, habitual, and cultural. Nicotine, from what I know, is pretty damn close to substances like heroin, as far as how quickly is grabs hold of your brain, and how hard it holds on as you try to quit. Throwing a long standing cultural acceptance of smoking tobacco in the mix, and our minds have become even more conditioned to holding on to the addiction. Then there is the behavioral crap, like I talked about above, where I get a cig craving when I initiate some sort of behavior, and not when my brain is telling me “I want some nicotine.”

The quitting thing will be pretty hard (I know cause we’ve done it before) and thats why it scares me! But having people, like you, who are out there cheering us on really makes a difference. We don’t want to be icky yucky smokers any more and we are all for our friends telling us the same.

Another tip: Caffeine and Cig form another very habit forming chemical when taken together. more than cig by itself. I often recommend to smokers that they give up coffee (Easy for me to say—7 days w/o a latte!). and seriously, when that’s not possible, make an effort not to do them together—ever. It may be as simple? as cultural thing you mentioned above. This can be a tough one, so use all the tricks you got. <3 G

MEROKOK DAPAT MENYEBABKAN KANKER ,SERANGAN JANTUNG,IMPOTENSI DAN GANGGUAN KEHAMILAN SERTA JANIN.Udah di peringatkan seperti itupun masih juga merokok.Berbahayakan..??

Nah kalau begitu kenapa tidak mencoba tips berikut ini untuk berhenti merokok.:

1.MULAI DENGAN KEBIASAAN YANG BAIK.

Untuk merubah kebiasaan yang sering di lakukan harus juga dengan melakukan
kebiasaan lain,seperti makan permen.makan buah-buahan atau menggigit cengkeh,dan
lain-lain.Sebab sering kali yang membuat sulit berhenti merokokadalah karena
sugesti untuk merokok yang sudah menjadi kebiasaan.

2.TANAMKAN KESADARAN KEPADA DIRI PRIBADI YANG KUAT UNTUK BERHENTI.

Sadarlah bahwa rokok itu adalah racun yang kerjanya sangat lambat tetapi
mematikan.Bangunkan kesadaran diri yang kuat dan lihat dengan jelas bahaya yang di
akibatkan asap rokok adalah sangat-sangat berbahaya bagi kesehatan dan mulailah
untuk berhenti merokok.
Jangan tunggu jantung diri sendiri berhenti lebih dahulu,baru berhenti
merokok.Tetapi berhentilah sekarang dan katanlah itu kepada diri sendiri bahwa
saya harus berhenti sekarang.

3.BUAT KEPUTUSAN TOTAL UNTUK BERHENTI MEROKOK

Bila mau berhenti merokok harus sekaligus berhenti,jangan setengah-setengah atau
jangan seoerti ini;
sehari satu batang dahulu,nanti seminggu satu batang juga,lama-lama…,sehari
sebungkus lagi.
Bulatkan tekat pada diri sendiri bahwa keputusan untuk berhenti merokok tidak bisa
di ganggu gugat. Itu adalah keputusan total dan jangan pernah sentuh lagi itu
sampai kapanpun..!!!

4.MULAILAH DENGAN PERGAULAN YANG SEHAT

Pergaulan yang buruk akan membawa pada kebiasaan yang buruk.Jadi berusahalah jauhi
teman- teman yang merokok,tapi bukan bearti memutuskan hubungannya sebagai
teman.Bila di tawari katakana dengan sungguh-sungguh bahwa kamu sendiri sudah
berhenti merokok dengan perasaan bangga. Sebab mereka juga pasti ingin berhenti
tapi tidak mampu saja.Daripada sendiri tertular dan menjadi perokok pasif yang
pada akhirnya dapat terkena dampak negatifnya juga dari rokok,lebih baik menjauh.
Mulailah memiliki pergaulan yang sehat demi menjaga kesehatan.

5.ISI JIWA DAN RAGA ANDA DENGAN KEROHANIAN.

Hal yang paling perlu di lakukan adalah menyadari bahwa merokok itu membuat kita
terikat dengan rokok dan itu bearti berdosa. Dosa itu adalah kejahatan di mata
Tuhan.
Kalu kita berhenti merokok,kita bukan hanya menjaga tubuh kita tatap sehat,tetapi
menyenangkan hati Tuhan juga.Oleh karena itu berhentilah meroko,lakukan dengan

Yang pedas-panas bumbu rujak dan manis saus terbuat dari air, gula DKI (gula aren), DKI asem (asam), tanah ditumis kacang tanah , terasi (pasta udang), garam,’s mata burung cabe, dan merah cabai . All of the fruits are sliced to bite-size, and put in the dish. Semua buah-buahan yang diiris menggigit-ukuran, dan dimasukkan ke dalam piring. The bumbu rujak or thick sweet spicy rujak dressing is poured on the fruit slices. The bumbu rujak atau rujak manis pedas saus kental dituangkan pada irisan buah. An addition of sambal garam powder (simple mixture of salt and ground red chilli) is put on side as the alternative for those who love a salty taste for their rujak. Penambahan serbuk garam sambal (campuran sederhana dari tanah garam dan cabe merah) diletakkan di sisi sebagai alternatif bagi mereka yang mencintai rasa asin untuk rujak mereka.
