DirtyOldTown has a question about the Limit salt rule.

Heart.half.16 7 · 953 pts

I’ve having a very hard time cutting my sodium. With my job being sales, I end up eating on the go and virtually every option, even the otherwise healthy ones, has a bunch of sodium. Is making my own meals the only way around this? Or are there low sodium foods in restaurants I am missing? Even Panera and Noodles & Co.’s healthy-ish stuff are loaded in salt. I need some ideas…

:) editorgrrl

Takeout & packaged foods are full of sodium. Maybe pack a lunch a few times a week?

:) PlasticSupernova

This definitely seems like it would be a challenge. I found this article that might be helpful: http://www.ihelpc.com/best-restaurants-for-low-sodium/ Good luck!

From our favorite site, I found this as a similarly posed question, perhaps it’s of some use for ideas?

Starfevre has a question about the Limit salt rule.

Heart.half.16 9 · 4,629 pts

So I have a question. A spin of the wheel brought me the no added salt rule and I’m trying to comply with it, but what does it mean exactly? Nothing that has salt as an ingredient? Or does it just mean that I can’t put pinches of salt on things?

:) Dani K

Good question, Kristina. Usually, we make the rules ourselves for ourselves, so my philosophy has always been that you interpret the rules however you intended them to help you meet your overall goals. When you spin the wheel, however, you might be asked about someone else’s rule. I would still say the same thing, though. Give it your honest best opinion about whether you followed it or not, and don’t worry about it too much. The rules you set for yourself are much more important. These wheel ones are just to get you thinking about other health habits. I also think they were asking if you happened to have followed that rule for the day you were checking in for (yesterday, unless you were behind), not asking you to follow it today.

:) Starfevre

Well, I’m discovering that if I go with the salt-as-an-ingredient interpretation, there’s nothing in my house that I can eat for dinner but raw fruit and carrots. So that may be the deciding factor.

:) Starfevre

and it says “and if you just happen to follow it on this day” but it’s on the rules for today Thursday October 4th so I am interpreting it for myself to mean today.

SO! What do you all do when you have that salty snacky craving (besides give in like I do!!) Any good tips on some salty snacks that won’t cause me to go completely off the reservation ??

:) kdbirmingham

I find that I just wait and taste something before I season—I often find that the process of seasoning was more habit than anything. I tend to avoid salt on my cooked veggies. I also like cheddar cheese flavored rice cakes. That being said, today in the middle of what felt like a million mile walk I stopped and got french fries. So I’m not entirely trustworthy all the time.

:) jackholt

Another vote for Triscuits. Wheat Thins are pretty good, too. If you’re trying to limit sodium, some snacks use calcium chloride instead, like Low-Sodium Ritz. If “salty” is really just a taste cue for “crunchy”, baby carrots are a great choice.

:) JillLong

Alright, please don’t hit me but I have a lot of luck with raw carrots and Ranch dressing. The carrots provide the crunch (when I want potato chips) and the dressing provides the salt. Oh, AND it takes forever to eat the damn things and that usually gives me enough time to get my focus off the chips.

I’ve gotten vaguely addicted to the sodium and fats in fast food and junk foods. Has anyone broken the cycle and can you give me any advice to break my own cycle?

Does anyone have any tips for reducing sodium? I could particularly use a few cereal recommendations. I can’t seem to find one that is low on sodium, calories, AND sugar, but still has decent fiber.

:) dmv

Cheerios is surprisingly hard to beat. 1 cup = 100 calories (+ milk or yogurt or whatever), 3g of dietary fiber, 1g of sugar, 160mg sodium, 3g of protein. http://www.generalmills.com/~/media/Images/Brands/Nutritional_Images/Big_G/Cheerios-661.ashx

I mean, Kashi GoLean Crunch: 1 cup = 190 calories (+ substrate), 8g of dietary fiber, 100mg sodium, 9g of protein — so if you ate two bowls of Cheerios, you’d be up 10 calories, 2g of dietary fiber, 220mg of sodium, 3g of protein. And sure, that sounds like a lot of excess and missing good stuffs…

:) cmajumdar

When I was on my low sodium diet, I dunno… I mean self prepared stuff seemed to be the way to go. Cereal was not good, but almost anything that wasn’t like salad was not good (I was trying to stay under 1500 mg per day so almost every source counted). In the end I gave up and said that I really didn’t want to live life without salty thing (this was also when I discovered just how much I love salt :) )

Is it good to skip salt or maintain?

:) mayog

I think that depends on whether or not you have problems with sodium. Every body needs some salt, but most of us take in too much.

:) Harpocrat

In hot & humid places, it’s often necessary to take salt tablets, to replace that lost by sweating.

:) donaldkks

Oh I see. It also depends on the situation, and environment and factors.

It is a good idea to see your doctor for back pain if:

  • Your pain was caused by an injury
  • Your pain goes below your knee
  • You have numbness in your leg, foot, groin, or rectal area
  • You have fever, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness or sweating
  • You lose the control over going to the bathroom
  • Your pain is too intense to move around or it wakens you at night
  • Your pain doesn’t improve after 2-3 weeks

Potensi Ekonomi Kabupaten Garut

I am addicted to salty foods. I try my hardest to not make salty foods or add salt to things I make. But it is hard. Any low salt/sodium foods or meals people know that still taste salty-ish? I’ve found adding cyan pepper to things kinda works.

:) Nancy

I read something recently about adding lemon juice to things like greens, beans, peas, chicken and fish can take the place of salt. Try it and let us know!

:) gconyers

I’m going to try that too! I recently put lemon juice in my water in hopes that it helps. =)
