Do you take vitamins?

:) amberlynn

We used to faithfully take all sorts of vitamins. Then hubs read some article about research saying there’s not really much point and in some cases they do more harm than good. I’m sure the articles we read were simplifying things, but that’s one expense we no longer have.

I always forget to take my vitamins. Today I threw out all of my calcium supplements and I was kinda glad that I had forgotten to take them all the while I had them.

Mayo Clinic: “It’s thought that the calcium in supplements could make its way into fatty plaques in your arteries — a condition called atherosclerosis — causing those plaques to harden and increase your risk of heart disease.”
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/calcium-supplements/AN01928

So, I was just curious. I think I’m going to keep taking (when I can remember to do it) Vitamin B and Fish Oil. …but I’m not going to go nuts with reminders or feel any guilt if I forget my supplements.

Tenho preferência pelas vitaminas encontradas na ingestão de frutas, legumes, verduras, cereais, e grãos. De uma forma natural, do que os polivitamínicos feitos em laboratórios, mas de qualquer forma também são válidos, para uma boa saúde.

A way to cement having taken your vitamin or med is to attach the action to another action. Sometimes I cannot remember if I actually took it or not and if I send a text to my husband (typically my best bet for this type of accountability) and later I wonder if I took it, I can check my sent texts and not have to wonder anymore.

Me, too. I finally got D converted a few years ago. He insisted they were silly. But now he knows they’re not and I can instantly see and remind him when he forgets. Diabetic stuff = best not forgotten..

Nina, I am my grandma, I guess. lol

:) SusanT

Yep, the pill boxes are a great way to do it too!

Cynthia, that’s funny – YOU can instantly see.

Mary Ann, it’s A Guy Thing. Apparently. Superwife, with x-ray vision, can see through yellow plastic and count up to four (pills). And find cans of tomato soup on the second shelf right next to the sardines, right there in the front. Not all people in this household have this extraordinary capability…it is a blessing and a curse. I bet I am not alone either.

:) SusanT

I recently heard of an “affliction” called Manius Pantrius. It is when a man goes to the pantry and looks for something that he can’t find ANYWHERE. Then the wife comes in and finds it right away. LOL.

:) MaryAnn

A frequent vignette in our house:

Husband opens door to kitchen cupboard, or fridge, or closet, or drawer of dresser… and says:
“Where’s the X? Did we run out? I thought we had some. I can’t see it. What happened to it?”

I sigh, smile like the Cheshire Cat, try hard not to shake my head or roll my eyes, walk over and say, “Just a minute. I’ll find it”.

I open the door to [whatever], reach in, and pull out the X. I hand it to husband.

Husband chuckles sheepishly and says: “You must have moved it.”

I walk away, sigh, smile like the Cheshire Cat, try hard not to shake my head or roll my eyes.

I really don’t like male-bashing, though, and worry when it could start to sound like that.
So just to balance the record: he works hard, puts up with my grumpiness and all my other flaws, doesn’t get grumpy back, is amiable and fun and interesting, indulges me in all kinds of things. And lots of other stuff.
(And he still can’t find what’s right in front of his nose. Teehee.)

:) CynthiaR

Oh, goodness, no ‘bashing’ intended! We are just so differently abled. I love the look on D’s face (wry bemusement?) when I try to read a map upside down (I have to turn it around lol) or even fold it properly when i am do e with it…or when i cannot figure out which way to turn the wrench or make a horrid mess at assembling something in the wrong order and it all comes out skewiff and he has to take it apart and do it Right.

It makes life interesting and wonderfully variable…and we laugh a lot. But bashing? Never. ‘Celebration’ is more like it. ;-)

Manius pantrius?? Oh, Susan, that is wickedly wonderfuli I suspect it’s something on a chromosome, then? Thank heavens we have a name for it. That helps. :-D

:) SusanT

Yep, no bashing here. My husband is a proud proclaimer of his manius pantrius condition. After 27 years, we’ve kind of gotten a little easier on ourselves and each other. :-)

VenomousSwan has a tip for the Take a multivitamin rule.

Heart.full.16 10 · 5,010 pts

I’ve been getting sick and tired of feeling ill whenever I took a multivitamin. So out of desperation I changed vitamin brands again, and I am trying those Gummi multivitamins (the adult ones). The good news is that it hasn’t made me sick at all. I no longer spend my mornings feeling weak, lounging on a fainting couch in the salon, fanning myself and reflecting on that dastardly Rhett Butler….
….Oh, wait…
Anyways, if you’re like me and multivitamins make you feel really crappy, try the gummi ones. They seem to do the trick.

VenomousSwan has a question about the Take a multivitamin rule.

Heart.full.16 10 · 5,010 pts

Hey guys, quick question (though a kind of gross one)! This month I’ve started taking a multivitamin every day. However, every time I take it for about 30-40 minutes afterwards I feel incredibly nauseous. It’s so bad that I have to lay down on the couch and meditate to “not puke Exorcist style.” I’ve tried taking it with food, without food, with tons of water or without and it doesn’t make a difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this happens or what I can do to make it stop? Does anyone else have this problem?

:) ghenne04

Unfortunately I don’t have any advice, but you aren’t alone! Every once in a while I get a little queasy after taking the multivitamin, but I don’t know why, and I don’t know how to prevent it :(

:) VenomousSwan

I did! First I was taking these hippie vitamins that had a weird fish aftertaste (gross), so I changed them to Women’s One-A-Day. Both of them make me feel sick. I’ll see how it goes and if I still feel like poop after another few days I’ll talk to my doctor. :)
At least I’m not the only one who gets sick from vitamins. I was feeling like a bit of a weirdo. ;)

:) bishop_r

Jane, I have this problem too – I’ve found that if I eat salad and then take my multi-vitamin, I don’t feel quite as queasy. I take a woman’s multi-vitamin from New Chapter organics, and if I follow it with a lot of fiber it seems like it works okay.

:) Tim Tucker

If I take the cheap vitamins, then I get this metallic taste in my mouth and feel sick. I switched to fancier ones and haven’t had that problem. Some doctor once told me it was often the minerals and if I got the kind where it said most everything was chelated, the sick feeling would probably go away. I have no idea whether that’s common or reality-based, but whatever I’m taking now isn’t causing this problem.

:) VenomousSwan

Hey teammates who take a multi or a prenatal vitamin: When do you take your vitamins? Do you eat and then take them? I think my prenatals are giving me a bad taste – like blood – a couple of hours after i take them. anyone else get this?

:) marylynn

I can’t comment on prentals specifically as I’ve never taken them but I do take a multivitamin every day (was the easiest rule from last month to keep). I used to really hate the aftertaste but then I found the maaaagical world of the gummy vitamin. I even started to take gummy omega-3, which in normal forms I always find nasty but the gummy/candy bit seems to overpower the fish-burp. I take that one at night (empty stomach I guess mostly) and the multi + Vitamin C and Vitamin D in the morning with breakfast. I have seen gummy prenatals. Might be worth a try?

:) ambrosia

I really had trouble with over-the-counter prenatals when I was pregnant. My OB prescribed a different one (expensive, but she loaded me up with free samples as well) that worked much better for me. I don’t know if that’s an option for you but definitely try switching and see if that helps.

:) elerina

do you aet multivitamin???

:) Meowse

I didn’t sign up for that rule. The most recent research I’ve been able to find suggests that multivitamins don’t actually improve health outcomes.

While there are several possible reasons for this, the most likely is simply that the modern diet contains plenty of all of the trace nutrients found in a multivitamin, and generally in a more bio-available form. If you have specific nutritional needs (B-vitamins for a vegan, Vitamin D for dark-skinned people in northern climates), then it makes sense to supplement. But a multi-vitamin is mostly just going to go to waste if you already have a healthy, varied diet.

If you get super tired after taking your multi, consider taking something with a lower percentage of vitamins. Too much of a good thing can actually overtax your body and cause exhaustion.

This is for Claire. When I used to take multivitamins everyday it was easy because my morning routine included making a smoothie. Anyone taking any Omega-3 fish oil supplements? I’ve done some research, but I’m curious to hear from any of you whether it has actually made a significant difference for you or not. Thanks!

:) karenv

I used to take it regularly and I think it definitely helped my joints for running..didn’t notice any sort of cognitive differences but maybe I didn’t take it for long enough :) Although a friend of mine takes it and says it definitely helps her, she said she notices a downturn in her mood when she doesn’t take it. But I guess you need the right strength/ratio of Omega-3 oils too..I think it’s a good idea to get the best quality supplement you can buy, with the highest strength, and take it regularly for 3 months to see if you notice a difference. I must get back to taking mine!

:) oneramjac

Sweet! That’s extremely helpful. Would be interesting to see how much better of a mood in general I would be in once I’ve taken some fish oil supplement on a consistent basis. Anyone else? I’d love to hear your thoughts. :)
