Some days I have what seems like no mental or physical energy, and I just want to put my brain and body in standby, for better or worse. My go-to is mindlessly surfing the Internet, but limiting that is one of my goals for this month. What kind of stuff do you guys do when you don’t have energy to do anything?

:) immlass

I have a stack of physical books for this. Many of them are trashy SFF but other mindless fiction can do the trick.

:) editorgrrl

Podcasts or guilty-pleasure TV—with or without knitting or crochet.

:) Valette

Definitely reading a book or trashy magazine.

:) wallawallasweet

I take a few well intentioned breaths and try to go for a walk, even for five minutes to find somewhere quiet to sit…that’s been helpful for me.

:) ElsaM

Oh, boy. I have a zillion different strategies for bumping myself offline and generating energy:
- go outside. I designated one of my goals for this: get outside X days weekly. No phone, no screentime, no nothing. Sometimes I’ll listen to a podcast, but it’s also good to just… be.
- Sometimes I set myself a random goal: I’ll walk around until I see [seven dogs/three mailboxes/ten pink objects], then turn back.
- podcasts are great for this, as others suggest above. I have a rule that I can only listen to podcasts while I’m doing chores or exercising, which keeps me from perpetual internet surfing while podcasting, but it would be just as easy to set a goal that you only listen to them when you’ve shut your tabs.
- a book to read in the bathtub is my single greatest relaxation tool.

But I also find it both peaceful and productive to spend some time doing nothing (or doing absentminded stuff like dishes or laundry) with no podcast or other distraction. It frees my mind to do background tasks and pondering that I don’t do when I’m distracted; almost always I walk away from a period of what seemed to be blank unoccupied no-thought with new ideas and a fresh head.

Hi all… I’m terribly behind on organizing my online life, but I thought I’d go ahead and share some interesting things I’ve found lately. For example, I’m exploring MOOCs on coursera and found a course on Gamification as a business practice. Might offer insights into the operation of health month, perhaps? https://www.coursera.org/course/gamification

:) PatrickTucson

Maggie-
Thank you very much for this tip. I am very, very intested in this topic, so I signed up for Gamification course.

In a way, I have made my Bike Month Challenge with Molly into a game.
I participate in Health Month.
750words is a game thing, too.

~Patrick

:) msmaggie

Yes, I’ve found “gamification” very effective in my life… I hope the course doesn’t take away the magic, but I don’t think so… I’ve learned how to retain the magic in reading, even though I study it from a critical perspective and know how it “works” and even manipulates us. So, I’m looking forward to being classmates, Patrick!

Man, I want to sign up for that too, but I’m trying to listen to other people’s wisdom and stop signing up for every single thing that interests me. I do know that gamification has literally changed my life – mainly via Health Month and Fitocracy.

It sounds very good indeed! But I also need to focus my attention but it would be great if you could report some interesting insights from time to time :-). Many thanks!

You probably know this already LEECHBLOCK – I had heard of it for a while too but nevery ACTUALLY tried it. Please do, it can bring you lots of focus by reducing online distractions.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/leechblock/

You can add different groups – I have:
1) Emails & HM
2) Social Media
3) TV sites
4) News paper sites

And for each you can add as many links as you want and then assign times when it should be blocked & that you cannot unblock it (Advanced setting – but so necessary)

Please give this a go, it has already changed my working day by just using it from noon onwards today!

:) Cat

Great tip, Sarah, I will try it!

:) Michael Wegelin

Nice tip, thanks.

The good thing about my procrastination habit is, that I even procrastinate on reading blogs, tv sites, or news paper sites.

I even procrastinate on social media and email sometimes for several days in a row.

So procrastination is not always bad ;-) But I will definitely have a look at leechblock as soon as I need it.

Heart.half.16 9 · 2,582 pts

Wow, i am finding the limit internet usage rule pretty difficult.. any ideas that might help?! RescueTime is just not enough :(

:) Paula Gregovich

That’s a really hard one for me too. I have a private rule of “Improve Internet/TV usage in some way.” Some days, I don’t make any changes, but some days, I choose to leave the tv off longer, to go out for a task or activity in the evening, or use it differently than I normally would (like looking stuff up instead of surfing facebook). Anyhow, good luck, I hope you find what works well for you :-)

:) Paula Gregovich

I meant tv & internet.

:) SusanT

What result do you want from limiting the internet? Getting in touch with that result, and knowing WHY you want that particular result, can really provide some good motivation for experiencing the result you want. So, it’s going TOWARD something (the result) rather than AWAY from something (too much internet).

:) Smitha

Thanks Paula and Susan, for your thoughts! I need to do some more thinking and self-observation here..

:) Paula Gregovich

Keep us posted on what you come up with towards progress on that, Smitha. @Susan, cool comment! I like the way you framed that. :-)

:) Nicolette

Wise words, Susan! Yes!

:) Em

I agree with Susan entirely. I added the Limit Internet to my rules this month (sort of as an experiment—I think I went too high on the number of hours), but my main goal is to limit the amount of time I’m wasting and to focus on completing productive activities. That said, if you have a habit of just wasting time, set a timer for yourself to goof off, when the timer goes off, walk away from the computer.

:) Craig Carignan

I’d go some place that doesn’t have internet.

:) Smitha

Thanks for you ideas, people! Yes, Paula, will keep updating about how this rule works for me.. Managed to stay away from the comp for most of yesterday – it’s when i have work to get done online that i find it difficult to stay focused.

Yes, like Susan had suggested, i’ve been thinking about benefits i’d like to move towards – like less of dark circles(!) and greater productivity – and that’s already helping.

Has anyone here made a rule to reduce screen-time on the internet? What have you done? How has it worked? This is something I’d like to do…

:) mandyarruda

I’d like to do this either, I’m kind of REALLY addicted.

:) karenv

I tried it for a while about a year ago…it sort of worked for a bit but then I lapsed :) I used a Firefox add-on called Leechblock that limits your time on certain sites e.g. your favourite news/entertainment site, Facebook, etc. You just put in the URL of the site you want to limit and set a time limit e.g. 15 mins a day or whatever. Then it blocks it :) Here’s the link that tells you more:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/leechblock/

But then I ruined it by just using Chrome browser to get round the block rather than Firefox! D’oh!!!

What worked best for me was deleting my Facebook account, but that’s a bit drastic for most ;) I was wasting most of my time there. Maybe figure out what site is using up all your time and limit that one instead of all the Internet? I would say start small with your biggest time wasting site and go from there :)

:) yharlap

Yay, Amanda. Let’s do it together!

I’m searching the internet for ideas for reducing screen-time. Ironic, I know. Here are a few ideas:
*Don’t eat in front of the computer (or TV) – this seems do-able!
*Limit non-work screen-time to an hour a day (that includes personal email, health month, facebook, etc)
*Don’t use the internet after 7pm
*Only check email twice a day (or once a day) – you can put a signature in your email that says “I check email at 3pm every day. If you need to get in touch with me before then, my phone number is …”
*Quit facebook (I’m so not ready for that!)
*Unsubscribe from blogs on your reader (I actually went and did this before I read the advice – I still have lots of blogs I subscribe to, but most of them don’t post frequently.)
*Don’t use the smartphone for websurfing
*No games (for me that would mean no sudoku! Good!)

I know I’m internet addicted and so the thought of most of these really freaks me out! I can definitely stop eating in front of a screen (I often read my emails or news over breakfast…). I can definitely stop using the smartphone for mindless websurfing (usually reading news) on my commute and while walking around town). I can quit sudoku (my brain-numbing activity of choice – I tend to play sudoku online when I get stressed) I can even stop using internet after 7pm.

I wonder how to make a meaningful rule about internet usage… My goal is really to spend the time I currently spend on the internet doing things that are more meaningful to me, and actually things that are more fun (like reading, singing, making art).

Any suggestions, anyone? I only have another day to add a new rule, and actually, I’ll be on a plane all day until after midnight, so I guess I only have until tomorrow morning!

:) karenv

Well, I don’t think the playing sudoku is such a bad thing if you do it occasionally…it’s good to have a stress reliever :) I play Bejewelled on my phone when I get stressed and it’s a 5 minute space for my head and then I’m ready to get going again!

As you said it’s good to distinguish between ‘doing something meaningful’ on the internet and ‘websurfing just for the fun of it’ – so why not say you’ll limit ‘websurfing for the sake of it’ to a certain amount a day? Like half an hour, or an hour, or whatever works best for for you. Or have certain designated breaks in the day where you can check your fun sites. Good luck and I hope it works for you!

:) yharlap

OK, instead of making a rule here, I just went and added an extension to Chrome (the browser I use) to:
a) block me from accessing my often-used sites during work hours (eg, facebook etc)
b) limit my time on those sites to 60 minutes a day (outside work hours)

The extension can also track how much time I spend on particular urls. I added healthmonth and my email, so i can keep an eye on how much time i spend there…

:) threlkelded

I’ve done it in the past. My goal was to turn my computer off by 10:00pm. It worked really well for me because my head was clearer and it was easier to go to sleep. Of course now it’s complicated because my job involves being connected to social media. But when I limited my time I found it had good results!

:) Bridget

what extension is it?

:) jspad

I used RescueTime to learn how I was really spending my time in the computer — it logs everything you do, every site you visit and it is easy to tell what is productive and what isnt.

Rather than have a limit Internet rule, I made it my goal to do other things (reading a book, meditation) that would necessitate being offline.

:) mandyarruda

I think Jenny’s point it’s more interesting. More than limit internet usage, we have to schedule meaningful things to get done for us with the time we would at PC.
I’m thinking about a reading rule. I used to be a book warm. Now I’m so lazy to read, it’s a shame.

:) karalianne

What I wound up doing and will be doing again once I’m not working full-time anymore is just not even turning the computer on until it’s time for lunch, and then turning it off after dinner. I need to use the computer to do my work, but I don’t need it for much else, and I can use my iPod for quick updates on certain things throughout the morning and evening. I found that it made my days far less stressful.

Of course, I have looming work deadlines right now, so I’ll be on the computer all weekend, and once I’m working full-time I won’t be able to do my online things (or my editing work) until I’m home in the evening, so that’s kind of an important thing to keep in mind and make allowances for. It’s not a rule because I have other things to focus on right now and I think it will be really hard to get points for following it while I’m working this month.

:) sidewalkdiva

hmmm — cheers to all of you for trying. One of my great successes (for a while) was a weekly internet sabbath. I took one day a week (Tuesdays) where I completely refused to connect to the internet at all. Then I got a smart phone & I was sunk. And then I started having meetings on Tuesdays & it was all over. Now I hold to a commitment to have some ‘meaningful action’ prior to interacting with ANY screens (usually this is sitting meditation)…

which extension did you use on chrome @Yael? I’m looking to track my internet usage.

:) yharlap

Bridget – the extension is Nanny for Chrome. It also can track how much time you spend on particular websites, similar to RescueTime. Here’s a link:
http://saravananthirumuruganathan.wordpress.com/2010/05/05/instructions-for-chrome-nanny-a-leech-block-like-extension-for-chrome/

Jenny – I like your point, about focusing on what you want to do rather than on what you don’t. But on the flip side, I don’t want to make reading a book, making music, or making art a “goal”. They’re things I just want to be doing – and I DO do them, just not as much as I’d like because of the computer suck… So I’m going to try to limit recreational use of internet to an hour a day, and none during work hours.

:) CynthiaR

i did—and it helped, though I wrote it to be blocks of time away from the computer that i could identify as intentional time doing something else. Left to my own devices—and I am—I could spend day and night working and playing and communicating. So for me, the ‘walk away from it’discipline has helped. I am putting it back in for January in some form.

Like Jael, I am a victim of my own tendency to “computer suck”. What a great phrase!

:) Rowan

Chiming in here, I’ve never used Nanny but I use the StayFocusd extension for Chrome which is similar and has a really useful feature called Nuclear Option that blocks everything but your allowed sites for a set period of time. This is great because it means I can still do internet-based work (provided I’ve already allowed the necessary URLs) without getting distracted by blocked sites OR just by random googling.

Just my two cents, I didn’t find RescueTime useful at all. It either had different priorities than I do or it didn’t have my websites listed at all, and I was wasting more time rearranging the productivity values than I was saving by having that log. To be fair I’m not exactly a mainstream internet user, but I’m not sure that would really help much.

Also what I’ve found effective when I had more free time was I would give myself 10 minutes of every hour to use the internet (with rollover, but only counting hours I was home and awake). I also started doing a lot more writing and such on paper instead of in a word processor and just typing it up later, since that left less room for distraction and also gave the added bonus of a first pass at editing as I type it up. If I thought of things I wanted to research/log/whatever on the internet after my 10 minutes were up, I would make a note in a little notepad I carry around so that I could look it up next hour if I still wanted to know. Having that delay also really helped me figure out what I wanted to know versus when I was using research as a way to procrastinate.

I’ve been slipping a lot lately because job stress = self control is harder, but I’ve found that even sticking to that temporarily sort of helps break the internet habit a bit so when you stop, you still waste less time on the internet.

Untuk membuat oncom, sebenarnya tidak terlalu sulit. Bahannya, yaitu :

  • kacang tanah
  • ragi oncom
  • bambu

Kacang tanah adalah bahan baku utama produksi oncom. Bambu sebagai bahan sasag atau dasar/alas tempat meletakkan oncom, sedangkan minyak tanah/kayu bakar untuk proses penanakannya.

Proses pembuatan oncom pasireungit :

When man is serene, the pulse of the heart flows and connects, just as pearls are joined together or like a string of red jade, then one can talk about a healthy heart.
