Rachael has a question about the Go to the gym rule.

Heart.half.16 6 · 296 pts

My goal this month is to go to the gym at least 1x per week. Am I supposed to answer that I didn’t go today and lose a point? This is my first month here, so I’m not sure how to track this since it’s not a daily thing.

:) Rachael

Never mind! I figured it out lol. I just answered that I didn’t go, and then it brought me to the screen where it shows me how much time I have left to meet my quota. I’m excited about this. :)

:) Brooke

Also…
I like to remember that
- this is a game (be light about it… pressure just doesn’t work so well in the looooong run)
and
- I get to play it the way I want (which means if I can decide if housework is “exercise” or if chocolate is part of what I consider a “healthy” snack, or whatever. The more I make it mine, the better I stick to my “rules”… or that I ask others how they do it… as you did…)

just some thoughts….

And also… WELCOME!

another good idea
to keep myself
accountable, is
to join a Team.

Good Luck Rachael!

Thank you Brooke! Some really good tips, I will definitely have to remember that.. Although getting myself to the gym is seriously going to be hard for me (even though it’s right down the street), I’m excited about getting to say that I did go :)

Also I sent a request to join a team, I think it was called the Habiteers or something like that. Hopefully I’ll hear back soon! Am looking forward to also connecting with people with similar goals and making this a ‘multiplayer game’!

Hi guys, is/ was anyone else intimidated by the prospect of going to the gym and everyone else being stronger, faster, better than you are? Any tips welcome! I have set myself a goal of going twice a week this month. Worse still its a work gym!

Sincerely

Alarmed of London

:) Cassfish320

You should always want to workout for yourself. That is who you are truly benefitting. It is hard to not feel intimidated by others, but if you remind yourself that they once were in your shoes (a beginner or trying to set themselves on track) then it makes it easier. Plus, each time you go, YOU ARE GETTING STRONGER AND BETTER!!
Keep at it!

If you have an iPhone and you can’t motivate yourself to go download Gym Pact. If you don’t go yo have to pay and if you do go you get rewarded. They aren’t paying me to say that it just works for me.

Soooo if I know I am going to miss a day going to the gym if I go twice the day before or after would it be okay if logged the day I missed as going?

:) SusanT

Different people do differing things on here, iBEW. I’ve definitely made adjustments, while still reporting completing a rule. Kind of comes down to how YOU think about it.

So it’s 92 degrees where I live today and I’m an asthmatic. There’s no way in hell I’m physically going to the gym today. I still want to work out though. Any suggestions on good exercises to do at home?

Mark Sisson talks about doing body weight exercises. I find this a great way to get in a good workout without going to a gym.

with technology advanced as it is, is it more worth it working out at home for example your own gym in house or p90x or going to a gym where you know everyone and it turns into a sociable event and get easily distracted from your workout, for example hot girls on treadmills. i find myself on the treadmill more than doing core work, because im trying to get laid. lol

So, if I am unable to go to a gym due to no fault of my own for the month that I have this rule, is there an alternative that makes sense and isn’t cheating?

:) drlith

If it were me, I would just mentally re-write my rule to be a “exercise X days a week” rule and do something that doesn’t require gym equipment, like bodyweight strength training.

:) Siouxzeegirl

I agree, you can do things at home. Ab exercises, squats, lunges, etc.. Walking the stairs (if you have any)

:) immlass

Yeah, home exercise = gym for rules purposes if you can’t go.

I’ve been thinking of trying a spin class.

:) Brooke

Aaaaahh…
My wimpy notes on spinning:
My son and I think of “spinning” as a nightmarish gift from Hell especially designed to mushify the crotch.
Neither he nor I were able to walk properly after it,
spoke to the instructor who adjusted the bikes this way and that, but to no avail.
My brother and sister swear by it, so we gave it a try
on that basis, but oy oy oy, it was brutal on certain
tender areas. They told me, “Oh that… you get used to it…,”
Well, we wimped out and decided to stick with walking.

I’m probably using selective memory, but from the one time I tried it my issues were mostly about feeling like I couldn’t keep up. The advice to arrive early is solid – I tend to run late when I do get to the gym, and that certainly doesn’t help my cause. I’m still scared of not being able to keep up on even the most generous of settings, but it’s now on my radar as a future possibility. Thanks!

Any good breakfasts for before the gym? I have this idea that milk isn’t too good of an idea which knocks cereal out of the question.

If it’s absolutely necessary to eat something, I’d have something light, like a glass of juice and maybe a piece of toast. I don’t like working out just after eating though- I prefer to wait until after.

I am a pretty big fan of Orgain, one of those protein meal-replacement drinks. It’s all organic, has tons of vitamins, and they use real cocoa powder for the chocolate flavor, so it doesn’t taste like ass. Which, you know, is important. But I’m with Bianca — not a fan of eating pre-workout. YMMV, and all that.

When I go to the gym, my favorite thing is to use the different weight machines, especially the ones that are ultra-specific, and then I use several of them to round out and work most of my muscles, instead of the ones where there’s several different workouts you do on the same machine. Anyway, how do you go about remembering how much weight to set each machine to, or rather, what you set it to the last time so you can track your progress? I’ve thought about bringing a little notebook or something, but then where do I put it while I’m on the machine?

You should try to go first thing in the morning. Yes, it sucks to get up early, but you’ll have way more energy during the workout and throughout the day.

A lot of people hate the gym. I am one of them. The gym is generic. The gym is suppose to be where you get exercise. I think the goal is finding some activity you like doing and doing it. I found that even when I am not in the mood to go to karate…I still find myself there. Working out and being active. I used to dread the gym. So much I would talk myself out of it. So finding an activity that I like is a win in itself. I love Kenpo which is the type of karate I am doing. It is a form of self defense, if you want to learn more check it out (www.zultimate.com).

before we excercise at the gym it is important to warm up through a little bit of stretching. Stretching gives your muscles time to warm up, wake up. And preparing for exercise by stretching also helps prevent injury.

Heart.half.16 3 · 1,055 pts

Find a gym that’s on the way from work to home. That way, you will be reminded of going to the gym everyday; and if you’re carrying your gym stuff you will be able to act on that impulse.

If a gym seems like its close to work; but you have to go significantly out of your way to go to the gym; your procrastination tendency may cause you to not go to the gym.

Similarly, if a gym is close to home but its not on the route you typically take, your laziness can get the better of you.
