Good idea. Is that what you do?

:) Starfevre

I have started doing it. I need to bring in a different toothpaste because the one I have is hurting my teeth (since I brush before I floss). During one of my mandated stretch breaks, I go to the bathroom and do my teeth. It’s worked 3 days running, but who knows for the long term…

I’m always forgetting to pack floss/floss picks when I travel. Today I came across a floss pick travel case at the drugstore and decided to pick up a pack (came in a two-pack). Now I can leave one in my purse and another with my travel toiletries.

I re-added a flossing rule this month. I had THOUGHT i had it established as a firm habit, but apparently not, as it slipped a lot in September. Now I’m finding I’m not doing it consistently even though it IS a rule. Not sure what the heck my problem is. It should be easy for me to rack up points and fruit with this one. What’s wrong with me?

:) azurock

I never floss.
I regularly use brushpicks and stimudents, both readily available in pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens.
I have them in my car, my home, my pocket.
They work for me.
Dentists rave about my healthy gums.

:) Bridget

Polly, pick up the floss or the Plackers (floss on a stick) or the stimudents or the brushpicks!
I remember you got a good report from the hygenist. That encourages me to keep plucking away.

I was all set on established water drinking habit. Until I take it off my rules. Then it’s, “How dry I am.” or “I have such a headache.” or …

:) EmilyF

I set it for 3 times per week (basically every other day, I guess) which seems to make it easier. I figure that’s enough, right? ;)

Bud – "dentists rave " about your healthy gums?

That might be a good thing to include, if you ever sign up on one of those dating websites.

It would get you some attention, for sure. :-D

I mean, it would let people know that you’re just not some old coot with crappy gums. That’s important, ya know. That means yer teeth ain’t gonna fall out any time soon.
:-D

Just kiddin’ ya. Eh? :-)

(By the way, I don’t floss either, hardly ever.
And I use those stimudent thingies.
But I’m not sure if I’ve had any raving dentists.)

Bud, do you brush your dog’s teeth?

My vet scolds me for not brushing the cats’ teeth.
Three cats !
And I’m supposed to brush their teeth !

I mean, they’re CATS, for Chrissake, we’d have to put them in straight-jackets to brush their teeth!
And then they wouldn’t let us within 6 feet of them ever again.

I’d bet lotsa money that the percentage of cat-custodians who brush their cats’ teeth is under . . . oh . . . let’s say under 5%.

Just wondering what you do about that, with Bones.
And if your vet talks to you about it.
Or raves about Bones’s teeth. Or gums.

:) Bridget

I have never heard of brushing cat teeth.
Have you looked into your dentist’s private life. Not to be blunt, but, is your vet insane?

:) azurock

Waterpik (instead or in addition to dental floss): Does it work, or is it a waste of money?

:) eldiem

Not quite a replacement for floss, but I find it to be a good addition. I haven’t cranked up the pressure past 5 or so (out of 10) so maybe if you go higher it actually could replace floss, I’m not sure. But certain parts of my teeth are just too close to each other to clean right without floss.

:) Kitteh

Thanks for clarifying that, Lori, as I have been thinking about a Waterpik too because I hate the sensation of floss betwixt my teeth. Looks like floss and I are in it together, for better or worse.

:) Phalene

The waterpik we have works okay, and it’s a lot easier for me to control the pressure. Without it, I generally floss so hard I bleed, despite otherwise healthy gums.

:) Andrhia

I’ve been very happy with my waterpik, personally. I think it’s one of those things that depends on the specifics of your oral architecture, so to speak.

I had my dental appointment yesterday, and the hygienist complimented me on my good flossing habits. Thank you, Healthmonth!

The tip: last time I was in, I asked her whether the disposable floss picks were OK to use. She said they were fine. So that’s what I’ve been using. Being able to floss one-handed has made all the difference for me. I can floss at red lights, while watching TV, while noodling around on the computer. No mirror required, and my fingertips don’t get their circulation cut off.

I find the easiest way to make this a habit is to do it at the same time, every day, as soon as I get up in the morning.

I started flossing five days a week in November, and I have now flossed every day since December. So proud, and I can see the positive effect it has had as well!

It started as something that was both uncomfortable and hard to remember, but now I do it every day and it both feels much better and is easy to get done. I barely give it any thought, I just do it.

Heart.half.16 9 · 5,214 pts

Having been something less than a regular flosser, I needed to read up on how to do it properly. I thought I’d share what I learned. NOTE: any flossing is better than no flossing at all. Don’t stop flossing because you don’t think you can get perfect technique. It’s better to floss twice a week in a mediocre fashion than to never floss.

How to Floss**and How to Brush, as the Two Go Together

Your tools

Before brushing your teeth, pull out an arms length of floss, approximately 18 inches, and wind each end around your middle or index fingers. Grasp 1 to 2 inches of the floss with your index finger and thumb. Does your floss have fluoride? Good for you. Now is a good time to pull out your toothbrush and toothpaste, and mouthwash if you have any. Also, have a gold star sticker at the ready to reward yourself when flossing is through.

Get that floss between your teeth.

Gently glide the floss in between the teeth in a sawing motion. Use care not to snap the floss between the teeth as this may cause trauma to the tissue. Snapping floss is bad technique for another reason, too: snapping only loosens food, and doesn’t scrape the tooth surface clean of plaque (the main reason that you’re flossing in the first place).

So I got this stuff between my teeth. Now what do I do with it?

Angle the floss so it hugs the tooth in a ā€œcā€ shape. Gently slide the floss up and down the surface of the tooth making sure it goes slightly below the gumline. Don’t go too far—you shouldn’t be tugging against your gums. When complete, angle the floss to hug the opposite tooth, and repeat this step. Remember: if you pop your floss in and out, you’re not getting both teeth.

It takes a fair amount of scraping to dislodge plaque. The floss should be pressed firmly against the tooth surface and scraped up and down along the long axis of the tooth (not back and forth as if one were shining shoes with a buff cloth). If you are pressing hard enough you will hear a squeaking sound. That’s good—you’re getting the tooth “squeaky clean.”

Continue flossing all of the upper and lower teeth. (If you’re thinking “this takes too long” do your upper teeth before you brush in the morning, and your lower teeth before you brush at night.) Try working in a clockwise direction, beginning with your upper molars on your left side and then ending with your lower molars on your left side. As you move on to each set teeth, unwind the floss from your fingers, and rewind it so there is a clean section of floss to use.

Toss out your floss, being careful that it all ends up in the wastebasket, and doesn’t leave unsightly danglers over the edge. (While not related to your dental health, this is certainly part of good flossing technique—it is always good technique not to annoy one’s fellows by not leaving danglers.)

Hooray! All done!

No you’re not!

Flossing isn’t really complete unless you brush. (Again, though, it is better to floss imperfectly than not at all. If you can only fit it in without brushing right after, then do it without brushing!)

Pick up your toothbrush, wet it, and apply a thin strip of toothpaste. Try to use a toothpaste with fluoride.

Begin by brushing your upper molars (back teeth) on your left side and work in a clockwise direction. Point the bristles toward the gumline, in a 45-degree angle. Use a short circular motion for approximately 20 seconds.

Do the Roll

After 20 seconds, roll the brush head away from the gumline, so the bristles sweep the surface of the tooth, removing the food and plaque. Continue working in a clockwise direction, ending with the lower molars on your left side. Repeat the short circular motions and the roll away on the inside surface of the upper and lower molars.

Don’t just brush the outside

Brush the back surface of the upper-front teeth by using the tip of the toothbrush head. Direct the bristles toward the gumline, and use a flicking motion down the surface of the tooth. Do this 2 to 3 times. Turn the toothbrush over, and do the same for the bottom-front teeth. Then, brush the biting surface of the upper and lower premolars and molars, using a circular motion.

And now, for the big finish!

Using a gentle circular motion, brush your tongue for 30 seconds and the inside of your cheeks for 30 seconds. This gets rid of the bacteria that causes bad breath. Rinse with water or fluoridated mouthwash.

All done!

Now, give yourself that gold star.

:) Acanthous

I am vaguely shocked to find out that I should floss first. O the shame!

:) ocherdraco

Ah! You’ve basically got two options: so called “super floss,” which has a tip to help you thread through your braces, or an interdental brush, which you just poke in and out. The interdental brush isn’t quite as effective, but has the added value of being of use to clean the braces themselves. Were I you, I’d probably get both, and use the floss as much as possible, and the brush when I either didn’t feel like it, or had lots of other crud to get out of my braces.

Videos for you!

:) ocherdraco

Also, I should add that while I compiled the flossing tutorial, I did not write most of it. I cribbed quite a bit (including the photos, which I doctored a bit) from about.com.

:) noelster

Thanks for doing this; it’s good to promote flossing.

I agree with all of the above (esp. the angling of the brush head), except for one minor point: My dentist told me not to use circular motion. He said that can force particles back underneat the gums.

What he recommended is a soft, short back-and-forth stroke followed by a rolling ‘flick’ away from the gums. It’s described at dental.net – “Maintain a 45-degree angle with bristles contacting the tooth surface and gumline. Gently brush using back, forth, and rolling motion along all of the inner tooth surfaces.”

One other tip for brushing is to occasionally spit and rinse the brush; say, after one side is done. That way there are less particles in the mouth that might get back into the already-cleaned crevices. It all makes sense when thinking about the physics; picture yourself sweeping things away from a threshold – a new broom sweeps clean and all that.

I’m pretty sure most dentists would tell you to do it every day. If you’re trying to get into the habit using Health Month, though, you might want to start at three times a week, rather than jumping straight to seven times. It does depend on your attitude toward flossing, of course. I really don’t like it, so I’m easing into the habit.

Tentang Warteg

Kedatangan Tentara Inggris & Belanda
