what should I eat?

:) cnd

What do you like and what are your goals?

I like having things that are tasty to me and a large breakfast (otherwise I’d be hungry very shortly afterward). When I was taking classes, I wouldn’t eat starchy carbs because I get sleepy after eating them, but now that my lifestyle is different (no need for super hard mental tasks), I’ve added them back. :)

Do everyone take breakfast here? What kind of breakfast do you take? I usually don’t have the habit of taking breakfast but when I do it’s really toasted bread with melted cheese and egg so I thought it wasn’t very healthy…

I prepare a green smoothie the night before, that way I just grab it and go :) My usual recipe is:
1 banana
1 pear
handful of book choy
handful of Kale
Handful of baby spinach
about 1 and a half cups of almond milk
Blitz it all up in a blender and away you go! :)

Usually I am not hungry when I wake up.

If I eat, though, it will be small and simple.

Best breakfast to keep my energy steady throughout the day… when I can make myself eat is… is some tuna fish and mayonnaise.
The energy is much more consistent than when I eat sugary or sweet stuff and my mood is more level.

I too enjoy smoothies. Mine are similar to LaurenMoffett’s: 1 cup almond milk, handful organic kale, handful organic baby spinach, about a TBSP of ground chia seeds, one scoop of protein powder, two scoops of Standard Process smoothie powder (chock full of vitamins and goodies), one cup frozen blueberries, a cup of water, and some crushed ice. Oh, and lately, 1-2 tsp Fish Oil.

I also enjoy oatmeal for a second breakfast many days. I put ⅔ cup old-fashioned oats with the same amount of water into the microwave for 1 min 40 sec. I add about ¼ cup milk or almond milk, ½ cup frozen blueberries, and about ¼ cup walnuts. With a little sprinkle of dried cranberries, it makes a tasty, substantial breakfast.

Sounds good, I’ll give this a try though I probably have to make some modifications (I’m afraid of fruits…!)

I make homemade muesli, also called “refrigerator oatmeal”.
Similar to Susan’s recipe, but made the night before, and placed in the fridge overnight.

2/3 cup raw, rolled oats
2/3 cup almond milk, or cow’s milk, or whatever
1 tbsp. oat bran
2-3 tbsp. no-fat yogurt
2-3 tbsp. apple sauce

Put all of the above in a bowl, and cover, and let it sit in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, I add 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and some almonds.
Any other fruit or berries can go into it, too.

I either let it sit on the counter for a while to warm up to room temperature, or else put it in the microwave for 1 minute.

:) MaryAnn

I checked – I use 1 tsp of cinnamon.

:) Brooke

MaryAnn, why put it in the fridge? We leave ours out. Actually, I warm the liquids, put the dry stuff in and leave it overnight to cook in the morning.

:) MaryAnn

I put it in the fridge overnight so it doesn’t spoil or sour – the wet stuff in it, is stuff that I myself wouldn’t leave outside of the fridge for any length of time: milk (or almond milk), yogurt, apple sauce.

And I don’t cook it. Overnight in the fridge, the oats soak up the liquids and soften. It’s more like muesli than oatmeal – it doesn’t need cooking.

My Dr. told me to add more fiber in an attempt to control cholesterol without drugs. Then on tv I saw a nutritionist talk about a yummy oatmeal breakfast. So I bought oatmeal and found out it’s loaded with fiber! Ka-Ching! Double Bonus Points!! Anyway, here’s what the tv lady said: use Almond milk instead of water/milk, heat as directed. Add 2 teaspoons of natural PB and a smattering of Dark Chocolate chips. I tested it this morning, totally yummy!! Fiber & protein! Plus it was filled with choc/PB goodness. I may look for a different Natural PB as mine has added sugar which I did not realize and I may even cut down the PB a bit. This was an aweseome breakfast, but could be a good hearty snack too!

Ok, baked oatmeal is officially my favorite breakfast ever! I used this recipe:http://www.lottieanddoof.com/2011/04/baked-oatmeal/

We made it for Sunday brunch, and the leftovers had reheated really well…a little more work on the front end, but I can totally see making this often on the weekend and then having super easy, microwave-ready hot breakfast all week…yum!

Any recommendations for quick, protein-rich/low carb breakfasts? I’ve been doing eggs/beans/veggies and I actually really like that, but work has been killing me and I hardly have the time. Wonder if those fancy shakes Stickel peddles would do the trick. At this point, I don’t care if they’re a bit spendy. I need to make sure I eat breakfast or I totally pig out at lunch/dinner.

:) sourjayne

You can hardboil some eggs in advance and grab a couple in the morning… Protein shakes are probably your best bet. Not sure if Stickel’s are high protein or what.

:) dkr

I got the shakes. Good idea on the hardboiled eggs. :)

Some other protein ideas: http://summertomato.com/healthy-vegetable-sources-of-protein-and-iron/ I think making something like quinoa ahead (or buying) could work for a quick bite.

This morning my wife came out to the living room at 5 when she woke up to tell me to go to bed. I’d fallen asleep on the couch.

When I woke up around 11 I ate breakfast food. But then I never at lunch. Still good for breakfast? What about “Make dinner at home” since I’m using that as a general “don’t eat out so often” rule.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Definitely counts for breakfast.

As for “don’t eat out so often,” is breakfast a meal you frequently eat out for? If yes, then you can count it for that rule too. If you always/almost always eat breakfast at home anyway, I probably wouldn’t count it.

And if part of the issue is that you want to stop eating lunch out so often, and want to count it as a lunch for the purposes of that rule, you can’t use it for the other one—you can call your 11 a.m. meal “breakfast” or “lunch,” but not both. IMO, of course.

(I’m using a similar interpretation for my bright vegetables/green vegetables/beans rules. Green beans, for example, can count as either “green vegetables” or “beans,” but not both. Unless I’ve eaten what can reasonably be considered two servings of green beans.)

:) immlass

I would count a cooked meal toward the “make dinner at home” rule. We do that for (cooked) lunches at our house, but not so much for TV dinners. Also, breakfast is the meal after you sleep.

Anyone have tips on eating vegetables during breakfast?
My usual breakfast contains cereal + soymilk, or granola + yogurt, or fruit + yogurt, etc.
I am thinking of getting maybe one serving of vegetable during breakfast time.
Any tips? _

Do you like omelets? It’s always easy to slip in some spinach or tomatoes.

Speaking of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes are nice and portable if you’re on the run.
