Should I be preferring beer over Vodka?

:) cnd

My tastes lean toward beer. But that’s just taste, nutritionally I don’t know that one or the other is significantly better or worse unless you have a particular condition or you have a tendency to overdrink one or the other.

I’m haveing trouble cutting down on my intake. Any suggestions other than AA?

I am a big fan of Zen Habits and I remember a few things Leo mentioned to stop bad habits:
- Pause when you feel the urge, breathe and be mindful of your body and your thoughts. You will feel the urge fade away like a wave.
- Replace the bad habit by another one such as drink a glass of water or a cup of your favorite tea anytime you feel the urge.
- Put reminders around you stating what you will do and WHY you want to stop.
- Take it a day at a time, give yourself daily rewards and celebrate each victory.

Good luck to you!

I am having trouble removing myself from social media. I need to do these for that. What to replace the urge for social media with….? It is big time fomo and attention seeking behavior.

I went to rehab in 2011. I was sober for a year and a half, then started to drink socially. It was so boring going out and being the only sober person there. Then stress and other factors slowly progressed to me binge drinking, which I am still doing. My husband is stressed and I see a psychiatrist and a therapist ever month for depression and anxiety, but they have no idea about my drinking problems and I am much to afraid to tell them for fear they will take me off my anxiety medication or drop me from their practice. I don’t know. I was going to seek outside help. I hate AA, meetings. I don’t know what to do. I was searching online for help and came across this site so I figured I would see if there was anyone out there going through something similar and would have any insight. Thanks.

Have you heard of MBSR? “Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction”.
You might find that helpful for stress and anxiety.
It’s usually taught in a format of once-weekly classes for something like 10 weeks. Some hospitals (or possibly addiction centers) have MBSR programs.
Any other kinds of “mindfulness” training could be good, too. You could look for meditation centers in your area, and try out a couple/few.

Do you have a good connection/relationship with your psychiatrist and therapist? And do you really think they wouldn’t want to see you if they knew about your drinking? That sounds harsh. They could probably be of more help to you, if you were more revealing about your struggles.

Best of luck to you.
You quit drinking once, you can do it again.

Thank you MaryAnn for your in-put! I know I need to be up front with my psych and therapist, and I do have a good relationship with them because I have been seeing them for so long, but it scares me to open up about this particular issue. I will look into MBSR. That may help. :)

:) MaryAnn

Yeah, it would be scary. But given what you’ve said about your relationships with them, I’ll bet they’d be understanding, and very glad you told them.

Would it help if you started by saying something like, “There’s something I’ve been really afraid to tell you. For quite a while now. I’m not even sure I can tell you yet, the thought of telling you is so scary.”

:) lc1019

MaryAnn, that’s a good idea. Of course I will break down in tears. But it wouldn’t be the first time in front of either one of them, that is what they are for. I guess, I am just afraid of the out come. I don’t want them to suggest rehab since I have already been there, done that… but they don’t know that about that either. I went to rehab the month of May 2011. I didn’t start seeing them until about the summer of 2012, severe anxiety, having panic attacks, EXTREME mood swings, irritation, crying all the time… for no reason at all. And I know anyone who has gone through that sort of thing understands. I don’t know what kind of background you have or your status on this site, but I’m sure you know what I mean. So I started seeing my psych (who is actually super cool btw)… and we battled with different meds to get me stable. I did have a melt down on one of the meds, which landed me in a rehab facility for one night. (not due to alcohol). I was supposed to do a 5 day in patient program and instead, they had no room and I ended up in the crazy ward, literally. They tricked me and it was one of the worst nights of my life. I was promised a 5 day, mental evaluation stay with therapy, etc. Instead they placed me with the people who talked to themselves and had no awareness of what was going on. I could not believe what they did to me! I barely got myself out of there after one night and went to see her afterward. So she knows about that. We finally found a winner with meds. Now it’s just routine. She is seriously the best. And my husband sees HER husband (because they both own the practice) for his anxiety. So we both go to the same place. Although I go to a therapist as well, and my husband does not. I suppose since I was doing so well for so long, it is the fear of even letting even my psych AND therapist down. Guilt. Maybe start off telling my therapist first before my psych? Ugh, the thought of it gives me anxiety because I am letting myself down too, and my husband, who is SO supportive no matter what, and that makes me feel even more guilty. I thought about seeking outside help and not even involving them but that is what they are there for. It’s just scary and hard to deal with at this point because I did so well for so long. I just have extreme highs and lows… mostly lows though. I don’t need alcohol to function and did not have to go through detox when I went to rehab. I went on my own free will and stuck it out. Then completed my outpatient as well. I am just binging now, but it is ruining parts of my life. Perhaps I just need to come clean and I may need a different medicine and a different type of therapy (I looked up MBSR as soon as I received your message). Thank you again. (sorry I wrote a novel)

Ok, for some reason, this posted in html code and I don’t know why.

:) MaryAnn

My goodness, what an ordeal you’ve been through.
I hope you find your way, soon. From what you’ve said, I think you will. For sure, I’d encourage you to come clean (as you said). And remember that people want to support you – therapist, psych, husband. Please let them.

And forgive me for saying the obvious – you know this already – but alcohol actually makes everything worse. It seems like it makes things better at the time, but actually, it doesn’t, it makes you feel worse (it’s a depressant).

Sending you good thoughts, and wishing you good luck, lc.

(btw, your post looks completely normal to me.)

i’d just like to second MaryAnn’s suggestion of MBSR. i took a MBSR class a few years ago after my psychiatrist recommended it, and it really helped with my social anxiety. i’ve just started another MBSR class this week to try to help with my depression. there are lots of youtube videos/audio of guided meditation for free! also an iPhone app called “Breathe” that has guided meditation.

Before I resort to drink, how do I add a rule?

:) MaryAnn

Welllllll……
After you pass the first of the month, the rules are kinda locked in for the month. So you’re stuck with what you’ve got, until February.

:) MaryAnn

It’s actually more nuanced than that. For example, a person could join Health Month later into a particular month, etc. But I just looked at your profile, and it appears that you’ve played a few turns already…. so that would mean that you’re locked in now.

In February, you have a new chance to choose new rules.

How much alcohol do you drink in a month?

:) Michael Wegelin

Varies widely. At max, I have four bottles of wine (3 litres), eight bottles of beer (2 litres) and maybe four glasses of brandy or whiskey per month.

More important, I think, is to have a limit on the daily intake. My rule is, to have a maximum of two glasses per day. A glass of wine is 0.25 litres, a glass of beer is 0.5 litres, and a glass of brandy is 0.02 litres.

Given my current condition, however, I would be totally stoned after having had two glasses. It’s very good to have several weeks of alcohol fasting. I usually do this during lent. Mind you, the first glass of wine going with the easter lamb sends me into lala-land. So I get the most bang for the buck ;-)

HH and I usually split a bottle of wine over the weekend. We use tiny, tiny glasses – that way it seems like more than it actually is!

Zero alcohol drinking.

:) msmaggie

In order to finish my dissertation and be more aware of daily attitudes (rather than numbing them) and also to save money and also to loose weight, my partner and I stopped drinking during the week. Now we only drink on the weekends or at social functions / celebrations. Our desire for alcohol has really changed. We both feel less groggy and more alert. We both love a quality beer or a nice glass of wine or even a gin and tonic (assuming it ever gets warm here…) but the benefits of not drinking (or drinking much less) have far outweighed our enjoyment of imbibing.

Toast with beer also protects against myocardial infarction. Back in the organ of the American Chemical Society published a study of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) according to which drinking a daily glass of beer produces biochemical changes in blood that help prevent the possibility of a heart attack.
